with an fstop of 3.5 you are goin' to get a very shallow depth of field in a macro setting..need to try f16 or so , but I love the bokeh in these pics, and be sure and focus on the eye of your subject, if that comes out sharp then you can get away with a little less sharp on other parts..good luck
To give you an idea what the benefits of RAW are:
Set up a tripod to capture an image that has alot of light and color gradients eg: A sunset lanscape shot.
Capture the image using jpg. then change the setting to capture the same image in RAW.
Load your card in your computer and retrieve the images.
(With RAW you will have to use software that can work with RAW files in order to view them)
Compare the two images.
When I first started shooting images; I used the high quality, large format, jpeg setting. Then; out of curiosity I tried RAW format. In my case I saw a subtle increase of sharpness, better color depth, and wider dynamics in contrast.
Some people will argue that the extra work and file size doesn't justify the benefits of shooting RAW. I'm NOT one of them.

many many advantages..one you can change the White Balance easily..thus if you do have a red cast for some reason you can take it out ..and working in PS in Raw is none damaging to your images, when you work with them in jpg mode every time you save them it compresses the file and you lose some of the quality of the picture..
Jdx, I remember reading about the compression of files, but hard to comprehend, I need to SEE what it does. So. I'll try that. I've read many books and tutorials, but it doesn't sink in my head. I'm a hands on learner. Wish I could find a pro willing to let us newbies tag along . That's how I learn. Thanks for the info.

I like the first one best. That's what I said the other day, crop and lighten. I just thought there was way to much space around her abd abov3e her head in the previous picture. This is my pic!

a little different subject here..
Looks like a wicked fish with his mouth open. I think its great/
JD I was shooting in raw and when I download my pic to computor or ipad I am getting a copy in raw and jpg. My question is, is that normal or is it the setting in my camera? It didnt take long to fill memory in pad as I was using on vacation to dump cards shooting in raw.
you should be able to change it to RAW only with the "quality" setting..good luck
this is a beautiful picture. the only thing i would say is that it needs a lil light on her face cuz its a lil dark. l love the rest of the pics you do great work

I will start it off with a pic I took recently of my friend and favorite model I was experimenting with my flash and ambient light and tryin' to create a "mood"..let me know what you think..thanks
Model is too dark, background out window too light. Area in red hues and area over model's head is distracting. Here is my take in a modified pic of your work. Just quickly done to show you my taste for this type of mood.

I feel you lost the soft pretty light and colors from outside-didn't really need all the area above the head in the origional, but the area outside to the right really caught my eye. Just my opinion.
