many many advantages..one you can change the White Balance easily..thus if you do have a red cast for some reason you can take it out ..and working in PS in Raw is none damaging to your images, when you work with them in jpg mode every time you save them it compresses the file and you lose some of the quality of the picture..

Jdx, I remember reading about the compression of files, but hard to comprehend, I need to SEE what it does. So. I'll try that. I've read many books and tutorials, but it doesn't sink in my head. I'm a hands on learner. Wish I could find a pro willing to let us newbies tag along . That's how I learn. Thanks for the info.

Sounds like you'd really benefit from some seminars and safaris. Do a search and see what is in your area....maybe at a local camera shop. I know there are many in the SoCal area, and you really learn a lot. And even if you already know it, it's a good refresher and good inspiration.

very good joc..macro is a realm all unto itself, but the appeal to the eye is the same..there it is probably closer to the "golden ratio"..and yes focus on the eye particularly if there is an eye to be focused on and give your subject room to go in your picture

Lavol, 1st pic is not centered so that is good , but the crop..in my humble opinion is on the wrong side..no where fot him to go it is all behind him, 2nd pic is very good .the 3 rd pic has some nice "leading lines" but seems to lack some contrast..pop..if you have photoshop or some similar program try boosting the contrast some..you might also consider a polarizing filter or a neutral density filter for those really bright days..keep up the good work

go to utube or google videos on the Golden Ratio it will give you great insights into rules of thirds and more... and on the very first photo..talking about more light on the face. not being catty in the least..I have made the same error...before you shoot, clean the glass on the windows to let in natural light on the face....and for equipment lighting ..buy the $1. flashlights..the little ones at a dollar store and some tape...you can tape them anywhere to get a light where you want it...on a chair beside you,,,on your shoulder , on a curtain...you get the drift.. My teacher said, that the only thing different in some of the expensive lights and these little flashlights is the price.... and the impression on your clients!!!

those windows really bothered me, but they weren't mine and they were so old and painted shut that you couldn't even open them let alone clean them..and I didn't put light on her face in that particular picture on purpose..thanks for all the input

I like the top one - the tighter crop compared with the nearly full length one you first posted. I still wonder if mabe a reflector off her right shoulder might have added a little more defination to her face. Nice pictures.

I think the reflection in the window would be beautiful
It is a very good picture and I llike the darkness of it.

thanks for all the comments, that is a very small non working kitchen in a studio of a friend of mine..we barely had room for both of us and a light stand with umbrella..small umbrella..I fought the reflection of the umbrella more than anything in there..but I learned a lot and still tryin' to learn more.all were shot either with one or two flashes with or without umbrellas.

I'm new to this and really wanted more depth. I am using a Cannon 50D with a EFS 18-200 shot in macro with F3.50
ISO was at 800.
