There is not difference. You only will expend 30 or 40 extra bucks. I have both and sitill use x2.

I am using Windows 7 too. Corel said that it might have something to do with the processor that I have. I have a new computer (a retirement gift to myself :) ) that has a 3.33 gigahertz Intel Core i7 X 980 processor. They suspect that X4 might have an issue with the i7 Processor.

I attached some screen shots and notes I sent to Corel to show the problem. I hope this helps. It may just be the i7 processor issue.

Ah-ha! It's been many years since I bought an Intel computer, mainly because of the price difference but also because one of my former roommates at Texas A&M University has worked at AMD for 20+ years.

There isn't much difference between x2 and x3 except it has a smart carver and object remover, and it has local tone mapping in x3. The downside to x3 is that it's a resourse hog and Corel has had 4 upgrades to it to fix the problems with it. X4 has solved those problems, and it's much faster. It even downloads and installs on your computer quicker. X3 was a good idea, but it was just a little too sluggish unless you have a quad processor with 6 gig ram on an x64 system, and then it ran on the 32 bit platform anyway.

If your HP came with Paintshop Photo Pro X2 or better, you can upgrade to x4 for right around $40, and as low as $35 with certain discounts. You can click on HELP on the task bar on the right side in your version of PSPPS, and it will give you the option of upgrading, or even speaking to a live representative about it. (I've done this several times this way). If all you want to do is update the features on your current version, just look for updates. Sometimes they give you some plugins, and KPT Tools, and a patch to make PSPPS run smoother.

X4 is the way to go if you want their latest version and it performs much better than X3.

It's a nice program if you have a highend computer to handle it's demands. When you ever do go up to x4, you will never look back. Go to Corel.com and you will see a video tour of what x4 can do and what they've added. The photo editing features have really came a long way even over x3.

Is Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3 a good photo editor?

I have Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X2, and like it a LOT better than Gimp! Easier to use by far... don't know what the difference is between X2 and X3 versions though. Sorry can't be much help

Yes!! I found Gimp very complicated to use.

yep, me too. :-)

I've been using Paint Shop Pro since it's first introduction by Jasc..and currently using the X4. The updates usually follow and mimic those put out by Photoshop applications. It takes all of the Photoshop plug-ins. For the average person, probably the only application ever needed. No one has mentioned it but probably the best thing about the X4 Ultimate version for $20 more, is that it includes Nik's Color Efex 3.0 filters. These filters went for close to $100 alone.

I just started Paintshop 4 and somehow allowed the feature that automatically takes your photos there no matter where else they may be if you click on it and for the life of me I can't remember how to stop it. I avoided it happening with photoshop but ... any hints?

I haven't tweaked anything and my application opens up with the library and a tab to the editing function. I'm not using its library at present and jump to the editing function. The plug-ins are listed under Effects and you have to click to open them. It automatically saves the original photo in a folder called Corel Preserve. I'm not sure of what you are experiencing but perhaps whatever you want to eliminate can be found under Preferences.

I hate it when new programs seize control of my computer!

Right-click on a photo, click on "Open with," click on "choose default program," click on the program you want to be the default, make sure that "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is checked in the bottom left corner, and then click on okay.

I hate it too. I knew it was something simple but for the life of me could not get my brain in gear enough to remember. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. It drove me crazy last night.

*** ALERT***ALERT***ALERT***ALERT
Just got a message from Corel to download SP1 since it "may" fix the re sizing and cropping problem in PSP X4. Well it did NOT fix the problem but added a much more serious one. When I try to save ANY IMAGE as a JPEG, it gives me an error message saying that the file name is invalid!! No matter what I name the file, I get the same message.
Please be cautious when installing this Service Pack. I notified Corel of the problem. For those who may be interested, I attached the WORD document with a couple of screen captures showing the problem.
