IS's going to be pretty simple math for me. I use three programs in Creative suite pretty intensively. I'll pick up a new version every two years. If it cost me less to do the cloud, I probably will do it. If not, I'll look for something else.

Does it work if you are in a cabin in the woods away from the internet?

I'm curious to know what people think of Adobe's move to the 'rental' software model. It seems Adobe may soon offer it's products, such as Photoshop (full version), Lightroom, etc. only through a subscription. The older versions will still work on your PCs, but newer versions will not be licensed the way they have been, instead one will subscribe to a service at a monthly cost.

Being the standard it is, I've always used one version or another of Photoshop. I'm also tempted by the upcoming release of Lightroom 5. But I'm not wild about the changes Adobe is making in their marketing by going to a subscription based service.

I'm looking into the Corel Paint Shop software, and their After Shot Pro. I have an older version of Paint Shop Pro that came pre-installed on my PC, and I like it fairly well. What are your opinions? I've also tried GIMP, and its OK, but has been a little flaky. I'm in the mood to send Adobe a message though, and steer my business elsewhere.

If I was a professional using the software every day for business it is not a bad deal, probably could use the lease / rental cost as a tax write off.

I use PhotoShop and Lightroom couple times a month, sometimes more, sometimes less.

I'm going to opt out on PS. I will use Lightroom as long I don't have to rent it.

Problem with Corel, it is PC only at this time. I have it on my PC, I find X4 a bit a pain in the A$$ to use especially in RAW.

I am a MAC user, I guess Aperture will be my go to photo software.

Yes. They have requirements for getting online every so often to validate the copy you're using and get the updates.

I found it interesting the ad appearing after the original post just now is "Photoshop For Beginners."

You just experienced targeted marketing. The ad for me was for asset management software.

Another thread of mis-information. Photoshop alone is $10.00/month and you get improvements as they are ready. The $50.00 is for the whole suite and THAT is a real deal.

Thank you, Cap. A voice of reason.

In answer to artBob, yes, the program works away from the internet, for extended periods, as long as the program can connect to the internet once a month to check the subscription. The programs are stored on your machine, not on the cloud, so once the subscription is verified, you can use the program for 30 days.

I recently took on a new gig which requires In Design...instead of paying hundreds up front I simply "rent" it for $19.99/month invoice the client for same and life goes on...seems to me a good deal for all parties. Should Adobe suddenly raise the tariff we'll either renegotiate said contract or...over and out...Chuck

I have been using the subscription-based model for over a year, now, and have found it to be an enjoyable experience (not always the case with Adobe, in my past experience). I originally had a student discount, at $30/month for the whole suite, but when I renewed, I no longer was a student. Adobe still kept my payment the same, since I was a renewal. Compared to a purchase of the suite, even at discounted student rates, this is a bargain. Every time an update to any program I use is made, I can download the update, and have the newest version. I don't have to wait for the next box purchase be available. If purchased at regular rate, the suite is about $2600? And comes out every 2 years or so, on average? That is $110/month estimated? And $50/month seems to much, when you don't have to give any long-term commitment? I applaud Adobe for, in my view, making it more practical and affordable for me to learn the whole suite, not just Photoshop. And, by the way, the suite does include Lightroom, which wasn't originally the case. I like Corel, but I don't see them making their program more affordable -- instead, every survey I receive from them asks "how much more would you be willing to pay, for this? or this?"
(By the way, one other nice feature of the Creative Cloud version, is that I can have a version on my desktop PC, and on my Mac in the family room, and I don't pay anything extra. Not like when I would have had to purchase a separate boxed version.) So, yes, complain that a "gun is to your head," and go to Corel. I am sure you will get better deals there! ;)

I hate questions like that. It's like the dentist asking, "Does this hurt? How about now?"

What will you do if the price goes to $100 per month next year? You will have paid $600.00 to Adobe, and will have nothing to fall back on.

 Put that way it is just a rip off. I would never even consider renting.

No more PS upgrades for me. I have PS 6, and that will be my last. PSE and LR work fine. As for the subscriptions, you know the prices will rise, and customers will have to pay or lose their programs.

jerry,

I agree, LR and Elements do everything I need to do in PP. I have never seen any reason to use CS, it is too expensive for me. Then again, I am not a professional.

If I were I might look at it closer but still not sure I could justify the cost.

I use CS5 extended and I will get the upgrade to CS6 ext. while it is still available (the boxed version) and I guess that will be it. I will not subscribe!

Look at it another way. Adobe will have a steady income stream with this model and should understand that jacking up a price for no reason might impact that stream. Adobe is a great company that make great software and is just not out to "screw" people. This model also goes a long way towards putting a dent in the software piracy issue that plagues them as well as many software companies.

Does the subscription also cover using on two computers (one at home and one on the road) like their current licensing does?
