i am interested in a teleconverter for the D-600 and my 28-300 FX nikon lens. I would like someone to recommend which that they prefer---1.4, 1.7 or 2.0? I know you lose f-stops with all of them. If MTshooter reads this and has an opinion, I would appreciate it.

I attached the .pdf document from Nikon's website which lists all the lenses that are compatible with the TC-14, TC-17 and TC-20.

The 28-300mm VR lens is not on the list, but MTShooter is correct that, when that lens is in wide-angle mode, the Nikon TCs will hit the rear element of the lens.

My basic rule: Any AF prime lens with a focal length greater than 300mm and with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 can accept a Nikon TC.

There are two AF-S VR zoom lenses, both f/2.8, which will accept a Nikon TC, the 80-200mm and 70-200mm.

When in doubt, check the position of the rear element of any lens you are thinking of putting a TC on. The Nikon TCs do protrude into the rear space of every lens, and if there is any doubt about interference between the TC and the rear element of the lens in any focal length, DO NOT USE THE TC.

I did some searching a couple of months ago. You apparently can't use a TC with the 28-300. Nikon, Tamron, and Sigma all say "not supported". I do have a Sigma 150-500 and you can use a TC with that. I got a 1.4 as several topics of UHH suggested that the larger ones lack sharpness.

Is everything tripod mounted or can you handhold at all with the 150-500 lens?

I almost always hand hold the Sigma 150-500mm, that was the whole reason I bought it, just to have 500mm off the tripod.
I recently sold my Nikon 500mm F4 as it had just been sitting in the closet for over a year after getting used to the Sigma.

Unless you are young and workout, you are not going to handhold the 150-500 for very long - and I certainly would not expect maximum performance from this lens by handholding . That is why they make good monopods. I will tell you if you do want to zoom and be weight and size manageable, the Sigma EX 100-300 F4 W/ 1.4X is a great lens - no OS - so you MUST be on a good monopod at least. Discontinued now and discounted.

Hi Barry,

My Nikon 1.4 & 1.7 teleconverters doesn't work with my Nikor 28mm-300mm len.

Thanks, that is what I was looking for. Seems the solution that most have is to go to the 150-500mm lens (around $1000.)

That will def. give you reach and it gets good marks for optics.
