i am interested in a teleconverter for the D-600 and my 28-300 FX nikon lens. I would like someone to recommend which that they prefer---1.4, 1.7 or 2.0? I know you lose f-stops with all of them. If MTshooter reads this and has an opinion, I would appreciate it.

SwampGator shoots Canon and uses a 300mm quite often with a 1.4 teleconverter, if that helps.

It does help. That is what I was thinking of getting, a 1.4

Check Nikon's web site but I don't think T.C. will work on this lens. They have a list of compatable lenses listed. The other options is to Google T.C. convertors and there will be ideas on there of what will work. MTshooter will probably know also as he is very knowledgeable in the Nikon products.

I think Greg is thinking that the AF may not work. The 28-300 may have its own AF motor, however. If not, you would have to manually focus.

I have verified, however, and the 1.4 works with AF-S lenses. The 28-300 is an AF-S lens.

Teleconvertors are made for telephoto lenses, not lenses with a wide to tele range. With the slower apertures typical of these lenses, you lose so much light, the autofocus can't work very well if at all. If your lens at 300mm is f/5.6 (as the 28-300 is), with the 1.5x it will be a 450mm f/8 or a 600 f/11 with the 2x. These are apertures where the autofocus gets iffy with a lot of cameras.

No TC will work with the Nikon 28-300mm lens as the rear element of that lens protrudes outside the lensmount and will contact the glass element of the TC, thus causing damage to both the TC and the lens. A TC will mount once the lens has been zoomed to about 40mm, but will still contact below that zoom level. Don't use a TC with this lens at all, it will be VERY expensive to do so in the long run. Forget whether or not AF will work, it wouldn't anyway.

Wow!i Did not realize that. What would you recommend. I have the 18-200 DX lens. Would that work?

The Sigma 150-500mm and no it wouldn't work satisfactorily. It would work on the 70-200mm 2.8

I would never recommend any TC on a lower end zoom lens, no good could ever come of it. I do not know about lens interference issues with DX lenses as I have never used DX lenses, I consider 80% of them to not be worth considering for purchase. The other 20% are still not up to par with FX lenses when the cost is considered. (with the exception of the Nikon AF-S DX 17-55mm F2.8 G IF-ED, a wonderful piece!)
If you want more distance then just get a lens that will give it to you, plain, simple, effective and you will be much more satisfied. Nothing beats the Sigma 150-500mm lens for the money, in any arena.

Unrelated, but that was a terrible act in Boston today. I wish all the victims a successful recovery if at all possible.

Try it b4 you buy it. You really notice the loss in aperture.

That's why it's always good to know a pro shop that allows you to try lenses before buying. Maybe there's something in Nashville.
