Nikon has a list of lenses on their website that are compatible with their teleconverters

MT got it right, but what's new? I have the 28-300mm and when I want 450mm I choose between putting it on my D7000 or my D800 in DX mode.

I have outgrown teleconverter-envy by simply cropping my 36MP images. No loss of light, no damaged lenses, and more money for my future purchase of the 600mm when my wife says its o.k.

Your second paragraph is the way to go. With the resolution of the 800 and the quality of the 28-300, it allows us to crop and get the benefit of a much longer lens (I use the same setup). Using the lens in DX mode, however, just means doing a crop in camera. It's still a 300mm lens at most.

Then just get a Sigma 150-500mm lens, problem solved.

A crop camera is not going to make a 300mm lens a 450mm lens. It merely crops the image in camera. You could do that with post processing and you have better resolution with your D600, so you can actually get a better crop in p/p. I recently went to Port Aransas and took a boat tour of Aransas Bay. The Whooping Cranes were at a distance, but with the 36mp of my D800 and my 28-300, I was able to crop some shots enough to get some decent photos. I'm still working on them but will post when finished.

I have the 18-300 dx Nikor for my D300 and CAN use it with a Kenko 2x 7 element converter. Apparently the depth of the lenses is deeper in the Kenko.
I confirmed this with Camera Mart in Pontiac, MI before trying to mount it. And yes, it does autofocus in bright sunlight. So, non Nikon converters may work but you have to work with a reputable camera store to try them on their equipment before risking it on your own camera. I bought the Kenko because it would work with my f2.8 80-200 Nikor ed(D) lens.

Is that the Camera Mart in Tel-Huron Shopping Center? Is it still there?

I'm not sure you are correct that the D600 will have better resolution than a D7000 for a cropped image. A D600 shooting DX mode has only about 10mp (24 x Area DX/Area FX) vs. the D7000 16mp, so if the image needs to be cropped to DX, a D7000 or 7100 will actually provide more mp although those pixels will be smaller and I'm not sure of the effect on noise or IQ.

At this point, you'd have to get a better technical person than I to answer this question.

i am interested in a teleconverter for the D-600 and my 28-300 FX nikon lens. I would like someone to recommend which that they prefer---1.4, 1.7 or 2.0? I know you lose f-stops with all of them. If MTshooter reads this and has an opinion, I would appreciate it.

Before you get one - check that it will work with the lens you want to use it with. I have just checked and I do not see the 28-300 lens on the list.

Wow!i Did not realize that. What would you recommend. I have the 18-200 DX lens. Would that work?

I was hoping it would but it is not on the list of lens that can be used with it.

Thank you, very disturbing. My son Mike, now in LA, and I were there last year. Countless acts of heroism
