I have the 18-50mm, 2.8-4.5. Very good for the money. Sigma does make some excellent lenses. As with any manufacturer not all are winners so read reviews of the one you want. By the way, which ones are you considering?

I bought my first Siggy 17-50 2.8 ExDc OS lens amd love it. It does hunt for focus in low light, but I get alot of keepers from this lens. It is lighter than the canon 17-55 2.8 (I bought it and sent it back). I actually ordered the Sigma from Amazon b/c of their easy return policy. Also, My lens came with a 4yr warranty.

All pics posted on UHH were taken with Sigma lens, and they get great replies. Check them or my website out for lens performance.

I have a Sigma 150-500. Beats some of my L glass for sharpness. I love it.

For my wife's T4i, I purchased a Sigma17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Canon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors. On sale now for $600 (I paid $667) from B and H. I researched long and hard for the best value in a general purpose lens and this was, by far, the best for the price. We spent a month in egypt and it was great.
Look up the specs and reviews for your self, they are more articulate and concise than I. I am so jealous of my wife. I wish it was mine.
The T4i and this lens, or us, is a winning combo.

It's a personal preference thing. Some people buy Sigma, some buy Tamron. Others, like myself, stick to the name brands. Due to the # of people in your family, especially children, I would guess that you're also interested in using the T4i for video. If this is the case, check out the Canon lenses that have "STM". This basically stands for "stepping motor", and they are made exclusively for the T4i (they will work on other Canons, just not the STM). This allows the camera to continuously auto focus while moving from subject to subject during video. I own the STM 40mm f/2.8 "pancake". It's nice and sharp, is a "normal" lens, and great for low light at f/2.8. Besides the fact that B&H has it on sale for $149!! An f/2.8 for $149!!!! Hard to beat that. I think there are currently 4 canon lenses with STM, and might be more coming. They have a 22mm f/2 for only $229.

I have the 150-500 and it is a good lens. I have sent 2 back because they weren't so good. The last one was the 70-150 which wasn't very sharp. They seem to have more quality control issues than Canon but they are also a lot cheaper so it is all up to the viewer. Good luck.

I can't personally comment from experience on any except the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6DC EX HSM.
This is a great lens and would be my first choice for APSC ultra wide if ever I need to buy another. I would buy this in front of the Nikon, the Canon, the Tamron and even in front of the Sigma models that superseded it.

From research Sigma has some other strong performers that I would have no qualms buying.
The 150-500mm, the 50mm F/1.4 and the 300mm F/2.8 are some that come to mind.
There are others but I haven't researched them enough to make a definite comment on.

And just for reference of what I measure these against - I have quite a bit of L glass and don't mind paying for quality.

I have the Sigma 50mm 2.8 DG macro. I don't see it mentioned much (maybe it is on the macro forum, maybe it is just not made any more). Used it for 7 years on my D70 and I love it, mostly for close up not true macro, but also as a general carry lens when I just grab my camera. Sharp and mechanically faultless. I am definitely in the market for another Sigma.

There are plenty of references elsewhere on UHH to all their range of lenses, and few bad references.

Hey gagirl89,

I love my Canon zooms but the sharpest lens in my bag is the Sigma 105mm f2.8 Macro. Sigma generally makes a pretty good product but as Charles Brown said in the second post, every manufacturer has put out a few stinkers, so read the on line reviews. Good luck my friend.
