Before purchasing mine i went to the local camera shop and looked at one ,had some hands on time with it and then decided to order from adorama as i saved $360.00 that way and still got the lens in less then 7 days , as far as the problems you had i would have sent it back n had it checked out and if they said nothing wrong then i would have decided on a diff lens

Ouch! Did you ask your local camera store if they could be a little more competitive? I do use Adorama quite a bit but if I use the local guy for anything I try and support them.

JR, can you show a couple of the sports shots you took with the Sigma 150-500mm? I need a new lense that is fast, in all kinds of light and distances.

Then this might not be the lens for you. Even though it is fast enough for most birding if you read MTs post above you will see it is not the best in low light.
Sigma makes a 120-300mm f2.8 lens that works well in low lighting but it is not a cheap lens. Then again, few f2.8 zooms are, quality lenses rarely are. Because I am so thick headed it took me a while to realize that but finially gave in. I am testing one now and so far am very pleased.

Jim, I know those are expensive. I paid $1,600 for my older one. I photograph horses as they are speeding around the arenas or pastures. I have to move from one position to another myself to get the backgrounds and to get the shots that I want. There is no way to use a tripod.

I haven't shot horses but did shoot the Sebring Race last year, also shot the World Offshore races last year, both are pretty fast moving targets. Used the Bigma on a monopod mostly, both cases there was good light. I am happy with the results considering the cost of the Nikon 300mm F2.8.

mawyatt, thanks for the info. Good shots! I like to work outside, but most of the arena shots are inside without great lighting.

Indoors I would think the Sigma 150-500 or 50-500 would be too slow. My 50-500 has trouble AF with the D7000 on a highly overcast day, with the D800 it's better becasue of the more sensitive AF sensors.

I have both the Sigma 120-400 on my Canons and the 150-500 on my Nikons

Manufacturers lenses are not always the best

Which version do you use? Have you given any thought to using a 1.4X tc? This would give you a lens of 280mm f4.0 lens. AF should be possible in most cases.

Here is one almost brand new for $224.00

http://www.adorama.com/US%20%20%20%20545561.html

It is my understanding that unless you are using a ver. II lens there is no need to go to a ver. III extender. I use this on occation with out any problems. To be honest though I have not shot indoor sports with it so do not know how fast it will focus inside. Someone here might be able to tell you though.
