BBF Question
in Main Photography Discussion

First THANK YOU to all who have have provided fantastic knowledge and information to this great forum!
Looked thru posts and have viewed many linked resources but did not find answer to;
Been using BBF with Nikon D90 (became of this forum) for a while and definitely like it. Most of my photos are stills - landscape, closeups, etc. So, been using single point center focus and in most cases recompose. But, also taking more “action” shots - grandkids, sailboats, birds, animals.
My question is what is the proper setting of the a1- Auto focus mode of the 4 available for this combination to properly track a moving subject. And will I need to select a different focus point from the center one - select one on left so I can get tracking with exp...

Capture One White Balance Issue
in Main Photography Discussion

I am evaluating Capture One (current trial version on Windows) and ran into a White Balance issue I was hoping someone has seen before.
I tether my Canon 5D3 to my laptop running Capture One and take a photo in Raw. The WB in my camera is set to 5600K. (I'm shooting strobes.)
The metadata for the photo taken in Capture One says it was shot at 5600K. (All good.)
But the photo Kelvin White Balance Setting (Shot) says 5306. The photo looks right at 5600K.
I've tried setting the base characteristics to Adobe RBG (same as the camera) but it didn't make a difference. I've searched the forums and no-one seems to mention it. I tried other K settings, and the same thing - meta data is correct but the WB setting is off.
Thanks for any he...

ACDSee vs. Lightroom
in Main Photography Discussion

I know this is getting old as all get out, but is ACDSee a viable option. On their website, the videos don't work and my questions to support remain unanswered.

I really like geotagging my photos. Used to love this feature of LR. Not too intrigued by the rent software situation.

Does the gps work with ACDSee even if you don't have an annual program?

Thanks

Anyone had any experience with Corel Painter?
in Main Photography Discussion

I downloaded a free 30 day trial with Painter 2019. No credit card asked for.
I have an older version of Alien Skin Exposure 5 years old. The new version looks interesting.
I pay for the Adobe package and use PS often. Thanks

Nikon P900
in Main Photography Discussion

I was wondering if anyone has successfully connected a Miops splash kit to a Nikon P 900 for doing water splash photography. The P900 doesn't have a hot shoe or bulb mode so I'm wondering if it can fire an external flash and if it has the right connector to hook the MIOPS to it.

Thanks for any help

Luminar 3
in Main Photography Discussion

I have a question about Luminar 3 on iMac. I’ve emailed support and asked them if it would work with photos app on the iMac as a extension. They said Luminar 3 wasn’t available in the App Store so I guessing the one in the App Store is the old version. So if anyone is using Luminar 3 with a iMac can you edit photos without having to export the photo to edit and then import back into photos? Can you use it as a extension when using photos? And question number 2 how are you liking the app?

Film Infrared Photography
in Main Photography Discussion

I shot a bit of BW infrared film about 12 years ago and would like to do so again. I have some Kodak HIE, old but tested and seems good. What I don’t remember is how to factor in outside temperatures when setting ISO. Seems I only shot spring & summer in the south in high temps.
Now I’m in 30's in Arizona for a few days and would like to try shooting Saguaro cactus in infrared. What ISO setting would I use?
I’m using an old Canon 650 film camera. Would appreciate any advice on infrared at all. Thanks

Lens Adapters
in Main Photography Discussion

I am looking for an adapter for a Sony E mount lens on to a Nikon Z camera. Would like to use my Batis lenses with the good focus scale on my new Z7. Can’t find one and don’t even know if it is possible to make. Anyone know anything?

Also thinking to order the Novoflex adapter for Leica M lens on to the Z camera. It is expensive. Kipon (available at Adorama) makes one that is less than half the cost of the Novoflex which is backordered at B&H. Does anyone have either of these and are there different features? Why did you select the one you bought.

Thanks for any feedback.

Uploading and downloading to LR CC, different file sizes?
in Main Photography Discussion

Well this is interesting.

I created a .PNG file from a screen shot. The PNG was 2.2 MB in size. Then I converted the PNG to JPG at 80% resolution, 800 KB in size. I uploaded the 800 kB JPG file to LR Creative Cloud. Then for kicks I downloaded it the stored image from LR CC and it came back as 1.3 MB in size! Same resolution on all 3 images, 2510x1914. See attached screen shot of the data for all 3 files.

Luminar 3
in Main Photography Discussion

In reference to Luminar 3. I have it installed on 2 Pc's. It takes up a lot of space, so I tried to uninstall it from the control panel, as usual, but it won't uninstall. It wants to install again. I have never had a problem like this before. Has anybody else had that problem? I'm using Windows 10, 64 bit.

All of the images below were photographed in North Carolina. Since 2013 I have developed a number of "styles" during my sojourn at Ugly Hedgehog, editing photos to give them more of an artistic flavor. These were among my favorites.

Wishing you all a basket full of bluebirds for the New Year!
in Photo Gallery

My wife placed a Christmas basket full of artificial flowers and berries in a hanging basket outside the kitchen window to help brighten up winter days. While eating lunch a day or so ago, a flock of 7 bluebirds ganged up on the basket hoping for an easy lunch. Fortunately the camera/tripod was adjacent to the patio doors so I quickly snapped off a shot of the affair. Am a tad reluctant to post this pic due to being criticized (correctly so!) re the potential of wild birds being affected by plastic--we all know the stories of fishing lines tangling up waterfowl and the senseless damage done to other wildlife due to these kinds of thoughtless acts. As a retired biologist, I am well aware of such and am as critical as any conservationist re t...
