New expanded digest format -- need your feedback
in Main Photography Discussion

I'm working on implementing a new format for the digest.

The old one will remain, but in addition to that we'll have the expanded format. It's basically a list of intro posts for each topic, one after another.

The new format is for people who prefer to scroll rather than scan headlines.

Here are some examples:

https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/digest-issue-expanded?page=1&digestnum=1813

https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/digest-issue-expanded?page=1&digestnum=1812

https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/digest-issue-expanded?page=1&digestnum=1811

https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/digest-issue-expanded?page=1&digestnum=1810

Please test it out send me any feedback you might have.
Thanks.

Marking Your Camera Equipment
in Main Photography Discussion

Saw this on the Today show:

https://www.today.com/video/rossen-reports-how-new-dna-tech-can-help-get-stolen-items-back-1418854979983

It appears perfect for marking camera eqipment. The kit really is only $5.

It allows you to register what you mark. Something I need to do anyway.

Aperture priority again?
in Main Photography Discussion

I recently read an entry here ... “what priority do you use”. The majority of answers were Aperture priority and auto ISO

I would assume those answers referred to shooting outdoors.

Is your answer the same if shooting indoors, with & without a flash??

First time buyer
in Main Photography Discussion

Hello! I'm new to this forum and am currently looking for a portrait photography camera (preferably a nikon).
I'm thinking about buying a nikon d7500, nikon d850 (not in the price range I'd like but possibly) or a nikon z6. I dont understand the difference much between mirror or mirrorless cameras.. still learning everything.

If theres a different nikon or any tips you'd like to suggest for me, I'm open to opinions and suggestions. Thank you 😊

Adjusting Exposure Post Proceesing vs In Camera
in Main Photography Discussion

What is the difference or Advantage / Disadvantage of adjusting exposure in PP. For argument sakes lets keep the adjustment to know more that 1.5 stops. I primarily use matrix metering (Nikon) as exposure method but have read quite few threads on center and spot metering and questioning my use of matrix metering

Photographing Scotland
in Main Photography Discussion

I would like to spend a month in the UK, Scotland specifically, in September of this year. I would appreciate any insights, suggestions or other advice from any of you that have experience in the area. I would also appreciate any contact information you may have for any photography guides with whom you have had a good experience with in the past. I am primarily a landscape photographer but am also interested in photographing birds.

Going to Peru, Machu Picchu in May 2019
in Main Photography Discussion

We are going to Peru, Machu Picchu, Quito in Ecuador in May.
Any suggestions about the trip? What not to miss and what lenses should I take.
I am planning to take Nikon D4, 28-300 Nikon lens and 150-600 Sigma lens.
Are there birds in Peru?

Appreciate the help.

Nikon Services
in Main Photography Discussion

I have a Nikon 7000 approximately 8 years old, a 750 about 5 years old and a 7200 about 2 years old. I do hand my equipment with care. Christmas Eve I used my 750 w a 24-70 2.8 lens set on A priority auto iso maxed at 1600 all indoors at night. Most shots were very noisy more so than usual. My question is does anyone send their equipment back to the manufacturer for periodic maintenance and if so how often and what do you recommend the maintenance to be.

Thanks as always
Joe

Canon 5D Mark IV Batteries
in Main Photography Discussion

I just purchased a Canon 5D Mark IV. I have noticed that the Canon batteries drain quickly. I did not have this problem with my Mark II. I believe it is because of the touch sensitive LED Screen. I keep my camera on most of the time.
Are there other users with this problem?
Would it be best to keep the camera off?
Should I use my battery grip?

Lightroom Profiles
in Main Photography Discussion

Does anyone here use the Profile feature? Adobe says they are not presets but color profiles which can be used as a starting point if desired. You will have to look at it since it would take too long to explain. I have started playing around with them. It is almost information overload for this old geezer.

Thanks for any input.

Photo ops in Rio Grand Valley
in Main Photography Discussion

I’m in Texas for the next 3 months and have a question for those who know the area. Back in Iowa I did a lot of gravel travel going down the backroads taking photos of old farms, barns, landscapes, etc. There doesn’t seem to be many gravel roads here in southern texas. How would I go about finding places to take those types of photos around the Harlingen area? I’ve used Google Earth to explore a bit of the area from a birds eye perspective and just don’t see much that seems to pique my interest. Are there back roads around here? Or do I need to adapt to taking other types of photos?

Corrupted Lightroom Files?
in Main Photography Discussion

I've got three photos in Lightroom which have no thumbnail (just a grey rectangle), no file name, no metadata, and right-clicking on them does nothing. If I click on another photo, then click on one of these 3, the grey file shows up in the loupe view, but it shows the metadata of the other photo. I've attached a screen shot. All other photos in the catalog seem normal. I can't find a way to determine where they're stored. Are these corrupt files? How do I get rid of them?

Preview unavailable
in Main Photography Discussion

When I have recently downloaded some photos into Lightroom I came up with a
"preview unavailable" note where the thumbnail normally is.

Happens on some, not all photos and if I check this box the photo downloads normally.

Anyone explain this?
Possibly some of these have been dloaded already?

Software download creditably
in Main Photography Discussion

Has anyone downloaded any software from a site called “preset pro”? They offer free and for purchase presets packages for several mainstream products, but I’ve never heard of them. I just bought a new laptop, so I’m especially particular about what to feed it. So the $64,000 question is...are they a reliable and creditable source to download software?

Luminar 3 as a Plugin to Lightroom
in Main Photography Discussion

I wonder if any one else is having this problem with Luminar 3. After selecting Luminar 3 as a plugin for further editing in Lightroom, the following happens: Luminar 3 opens, my picture (Tiff) shows up in Luminar 3 and I proceed to do further editing. When I am finished editing my picture, there is no apply button to send the edited picture back to Lightroom--so I am stuck. When I try doing the same procedure in Lightroom using Luminar 18, the apply button in Luminar 18 is present and I can return the edited picture to Lightroon--i.e. a normal process. My equipment is Intel I7, 7700K processor running at 4.2 Ghz, 16 Gb ram, GTX 1060 with 3 Gb vram video card and I am using Windows 10 (fully updated). All my drivers are also up to date. I w...
