Preview unavailable

When I have recently downloaded some photos into Lightroom I came up with a
"preview unavailable" note where the thumbnail normally is.

Happens on some, not all photos and if I check this box the photo downloads normally.

Anyone explain this?
Possibly some of these have been dloaded already?

Make sure that the Adobe Camera Raw Plug-In (ACR) is up to date.

This same thing just happened to me a couple days ago.... Some how the files got corrupted on import....I felted the files from disk, then copied from the card to computer again, then imported again...... It was fine the second time..... Don't know why it happened, but there was another update for a different program running in the background.....

Sometimes things just happen and hard to figure out why.....

You can check for updates within Lightroom, but you can't update the ACR independently within LR. Googling "lightroom preview unavailable" returns a few different discussions that typically seem to resolve by re-importing the problem images. You might need to remove the prior import from the catalog first if it won't let you import a suspected duplicate.

Thks for the tips.
I had an oh oh moment when this first came up...
I had taken Christmas pics of the grandkids and my first thought was somehow they disappeared.
It seems like no big deal and the images did download despite having preview unavailable...
the mysteries of the computer I guess.

You can tell Lightroom when to build previews. You can build on import, or for faster import, you can skip the preview build and then when you click the photo it will build the preview, taking longer to load the image the first time.

Check your import settings.

Steve49,
You are using a LR Classic version, correct? If it’s happening just after downloading, but then all is fine later, it’s probably due to LR building previews, what Frank says above.
