I've already done the "zoomimg" while shooting trick.
I too use to zoom my one touch Sigma lens with the Canon AE-1. I focused on a digital LCD clock in a darkened room and zoomed the lens :)

The diffused point highlights appear to be in the shape of +.
You are correct. Here is another photo with the same shaped cutout.

Out of focus highlights manipulation
The highlights can be shaped by placing non-reflective black paper at the front of a lens. The paper has a uniquely shaped cutout that creates the identically-shaped highlights. For more information: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBjoonaWQAA

The tweezer photo is not a composite. There is no focus stacking. 1:1 Magnification, MPE-65 lens
Enjoy :)

I'm not so sure. It looks to me like the wood may have won by not letting the metal go anywhere :|
You made me laugh :D You do bring up an interesting point. The staple easily penetrated the wood, but to remove the staple would require work.

Construction staples aka brads?
Construction staples yes. Before posting the photo I went online to see if the term 'brad' applied since I had always referred to them as brads. To my surprise, the word 'brad' was consistently shown as a single stem. They used the term 'staple' when there were 2 stems. Perhaps it's a geographical /regional variation. Thanks for commenting
