I think you hit the nail on the head! Many new photographers are afraid to ask a question on this forum because there is so much technical discussion that they are overwhelmed and may think that they have dumb questions. Especially as you stated when they are hit with more complicated questions than the one they are asking.

You seem to be too hung up on what people think of your equipment instead of the finished product...If you know what you are doing you can make almost any equipment do the job...Several years ago I shot a wedding with an Olympus 700 zoom and the people were delighted with the results.

I too have missed many opportunities with manual settings. Usually will just set the camera to 1/500 sec shutter priority and go from there. I found this to be the best for me.

When I switched to digital after 40 years with film I was also sure that I was not going to ever be comfortable with a DSLR. I am 70 years old and learn slower than I did in younger years but beleive me the things you can do with a digital camera are well worth the struggle of the learning curve...
