The other day I shot 34 pictures with my Canon T1I for my daughters Christmas card. There were already several hundred pic's on the 4mb card. As I was shooting I was looking at the pictures and they all looked pretty good but as always I was looking for the winner. When I removed the card and inserted it in my laptop all the pictures that I had just taken minutes ago were gone. I put the card back in the camera and they were still gone but all the other previous pictures were still there. I took a few more pictures and they were OK. I called my son who is a professional photographer and he said he has a retrieval program that will get the pictures back as long as I saw them when previewing on the camera. I sent him the card and he was able to get the missing pictures back. Does anyone have an explanation for this?

Corrupt card it sounds like. You never know what they will do when something goes wrong with them. They can delete random pics or all of them. It's just something that can happen with cards from time to time.

Did you pull the card with the camera on?

I'm sure I pulled the card with the camera on. Is this a bad thing?

The simplest answer is Yes.

Page 32 of your manual:
Removing the Card
Open the cover
Set the power switch to off
...

At least you got your photos back.

Yes. Don't do that. It can cause a corruption and you will lose pics.

It's interesting that the images could be recovered.

If the assumption the power was on is correct my assumption would be the images were written, but the index was incomplete.

NEVER insert or remove a card from a camera that is turned on!!!
Whenever a camera is powered on the system is monitoring the card to be ready to write a new file or review the old.

That is why you also need to "unmount" a card reader when using one to read a card on the computer!!

That is why I always use the cable to connect camera directly to computer and rarely remove the card!!

User error. Just reading your explanation leads me to believe that you are a rookie at this. They were there all along, just sounds like you aren't well versed in file/folder structures.

Always shut the power off before you open the door...

Perhaps with so many photos already on the card, the camera opened a new file on the card and put your most recent photos in that new file folder. Just a thought. Happy Holidays.
