The font size and spacing in the digest has been increased to accommodate mobile devices.

If you mainly use a computer to read the digest and want to reduce the size of the font in the digest to what it was before, then take the following steps:

Click My Profile in the top menu. Scroll down to Custom View Settings. Enable "Reduce font size and spacing in digest". Click "Update Setting".

If you always check digest by sections, you can enable this setting to expand the filter menu in the top left corner of the digest.

Click My Profile at the top. Scroll down to Custom View Settings. In the settings find "Auto-expand digest filter by section". Enable it and click Update Setting.

After that, the section filter in the digest will be opened for you automatically. Provided you are browsing while logged into your forum account and not as a guest visitor.

Thanks. I’m not subscribed to the main photography section, but my digest includes it. Perhaps that section is included by default for everybody?

Yes, Main is always included because it contains announcements. All other sections can be removed from the digest by unsubscribing.

If you follow some users and want to make sure you don't miss their topics, you can add them to your buddy list. Their topics will be shown at the top of the digest regardless of the section.

To add a user to your buddy list, click on their profile and then click "Add To Buddy List" button.

So I’ll address that. The advantage of the digest (to me) is that it groups the sections you’re subscribed to, so you can go directly to the topics in the section that interests you at that moment and scan the sections in sequence - saves steps over opening each section one at a time or having to scan through everything in new topics... The newest topics mixes them all together, and if you subscribe to photos and BIF, then those dominate the posts and you have to scan through them all if you’re looking for something in the main discussion. Of course you can open a page, go to sections and the choose the desired section (which I do occasionally), but for me, I prefer the groups, even if they’re not “up to the minute”.

I do occasionally go to new topics in the evening, but in the morning, after I read The NY Times, I like to look at the digest. Just a personal preference. “Far superior” to you, not to me. I’m subscribed to 20 sections (just counted), and many of them have no posts or just 1-2 posts per day, but now I’ll never open 20 sections a day, so that occasional post in astronomy or sports likely won’t get read.

Cheers
So I’ll address that. The advantage of the digest ... (show quote)

You can use this page:

https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/unread-topic-list-by-section?sectnum=1&sectnum=5&sectnum=7

This is meant for section managers. But you can use it if you want. It shows you topics created over the past 72 hours that you haven't opened, in selected sections.

You can add &sectnum=XXX for whatever sections you want. Then bookmark that link and you can open it whenever you want to see topics broken down by sections. Once you open a topic, it disappears from that list and you can refresh and see any remaining topics. And you don't have to open respective sections.

UPDATE: If you need to filter digest topics to just one section, you can do it by clicking "Filter by section" near top left of the digest page, right under the headline "Ugly Hedgehog forum digest".

This way you can quickly locate all topics in the digest that belong to one section in which you are interested. The number in the parentheses shows the number of topics for the given section in the current digest issue.

Original announcements follows:

I'm going to be making some changes to the way topics in the digest are displayed.

Instead of grouping topics by sections, like it happens now, the digest will show topics in one list. With each topic showing a link to its respective section. So that you can open up the section and check on the latest topics there.

I understand this is a big change for people who are used to the old layout. And I'm sorry for this inconvenience. But we need to change with the times.

The way people use the internet has changed. In the past people used a computer and allocated some amount of time to go over the digest. Like they did with their morning newspaper. So it made sense to organize the digest in sections.

While some people still do it this way, the majority of people now glance at the digest for a few minutes on their phone, click a few topics here and there, then turn off the screen and do something else. Until the next time throughout the day when they might open up the digest again and click on a few more topics. And so on. Browsing sessions are fragmented now.

And my analytics tells me that majority of clicks happen on the top few topics in the digest. So most attention is given to the few topics in Main while much more popular topics in other sections are shown way below, where fewer people see them.

Going forward, topics from all sections will be included in one list. So that popular topics from any section can reach the top of the digest.

This is what the prototype looks like now. Some minor details might change as this is still work in progress. But overall, this is what to expect in the next day or so.

I'm removing Upcoming Topics from the digest and instead we'll test showing new topics directly in the digest in their respective sections.

In other words, when you create a new topic, instead of appearing in Upcoming Topics today and then in the respective section tomorrow, your topic will appear in the digest today and then will be shown as usual in tomorrow's digest.

I am now receiving the digest regularly, but every week or so, email responses to topics I’m watching or commented on must bounce, causing my settings to be turned, off and I’m unsubscribed from responses to watched topics. I go in and reset my email response preferences, and it works again for another week or so.

I see. Thanks for letting me know.

Without me unsubscribing, a message is sent to UGGH to unsubscribe me. I have no idea how or why this happens.
I contact UGGH and they resubscribe me. Then it happens again. This makes the 4th time today. Happens about once a month. I’m using a MAC and to the best of my knowledge, I have not set anything to do this.
Any suggestions?

Your email provider Spectrum started randomly bouncing our email messages a few months ago. They offer no way to contact their postmaster to resolve issues like this. So your best bet is to change your email (if you have another one) or to contact their customer service in hopes of getting them to adjust their filters and let UHH email through.

I've addressed Admin here in this post, in "General Chit Chat" (that will appear tomorrow) and I wrote directly to Admin which I recommend that you do also. Go up top to "Private Messages", plug in Admin and voice your concerns. Pro OR con. Let Admin weigh them and make a decision and let us know.

This is in regards to the situation with Graham Thurkill.

You are assuming what he wrote in his little outburst is true. (Hint: it isn't.)

He did receive a PM from me about one of his jokes that was really over the top, but that was some ago, and he posted plenty after that. And that PM was basically me asking him to "tone it down" without any "threats". So it's safe to say last night's topic wasn't about his jokes being "too much to handle for some prudes".

Here is the message he received from me yesterday, which caused him to post his "This My Last Post" topic:

Admin wrote:
Your posting access to the GCC section will be revoked next time you post politics in that section. You've had enough warnings.

We have people who come here to get away from all that. When you inject politics into their feed, you are ruining their forum experience.

He received this message because prior to that he posted politics in GCC on at least five different occasions. And he has received a warning each time he did it. Yet, he didn't seem to care. So the next step after that is a ban from the section.

Let's look at the rules for the GCC section:

https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-3540-1.html

Reading these rules, can you guess what's the one thing you shouldn't be posting in GCC? And all the regulars know this one rule.

But Graham Thirkill seems to think he is special and rules shouldn't apply to him. I disagree.

If he continues to post politics in GCC, he will be banned from this section. Just like any other user.

And now, go back and re-read how he decided to describe the situation:

https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-767330-1.html

Do you really want us to have this conversation? Because it would have to be a conversation about lack of integrity on Graham Thirkill's part. He literally just made something up to paint himself as some kind of victim and how everyone else is a prude or kill-joy and how they are pathetic.... and he completely omitted mentioning the real issue. Which is him posting politics in a section where that's the one thing you are not allowed to do. And the fact that he has received more warnings about it than most users would get away with.

So here we are.

Oh, and you really shouldn't do these "open letters to Admin", especially on behalf of someone else. I know this makes you feel good about yourself, but most of the time you simply end up embarrassing the other user when you force me to bring such details into the open.

Things like that are better dealt with privately.

And now we have this: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-767330-3.html#13773825

I just posted a post similar to this in "General Chit Chat" that will appear tomorrow.

So.... you want more people to see how Graham Thirkill.... for the lack of a better word... bent the truth (or completely lied about the situation, to be frank)...

Should I really run this in the digest tomorrow so even more users see it?

What we have is a situation where a user thinks the one rule we have in this section shouldn't apply to him because "everyone likes him so much". That's the gist of it, really...

How dare I enforce the one rule GCC section has against someone as awesome as Graham Thirkill? Right?

I mean, if the ownership changes let him know, as he said. LOL. But for now the rules stay in place. And there is a reason we have "no politics" rule. Those users who have been here long enough might remember what GCC was like back when I allowed politics to be posted in this section.

It was so bad, people refused to post in GCC at all because they didn't want to be associated with all the crap that was going on in the section.

So regardless of how much Graham Thirkill thinks of himself, I'm sorry to say but this rule will remain. And if he or any other user continues to post politics in GCC, their posting access to the section will be revoked. After a certain number of warnings, if they keep disregarding those warnings.

You want to post non-political jokes in GCC, that's fine. You want to post political jokes, do so in the Attic. I frankly don't see what's so unfair about that.

If your image dimensions are small enough to be displayed without resizing, then that's what's being shown, so no need for original to be stored since it would be the same file.
