Yes, that is a new feature in some memory cards. It deletes images in which focus appears to be soft or in which people have closed eyes. Some of the more advanced cards will delete tilted horizon or in which the image just plain boring.

Oh- I ment to post this on April first.

LOL Captain you are too much. :)

You said "drying table." Did you print it yourself? What. Kind of equipment do you have at home? What camera. & lens did you use?
PS. GREAT work!

Yes, I do all my large prints at home. I use a HP130NR printer. Images were shot in JPG Basic with a Nikon D800E and a Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 lens at 24mm and F22.
The JPG basic was used for file size, they come out 103MB on the D800E. After processing the 4 shots into the panorama the finished file size of the Pano JPG was 347MB. It took almost 20 minutes to make the print on HP Premium Satin roll paper using HP Vivera inks.

MT, thanks for this information. The 800e surely builds a huge file. It surely looks great on here. good work!!!

The y-cable gives it more power and should read/write faster. I've had issues with computers not finding a drive - usually rebooting does it - go figure.

Computers are very strange - not logical at all - very whimsical. What surprises me about them is their inconsistency. I would expect them to behave a certain way time after time. Why would this drive/cable combo work one day and not another? And why would it work on one machine and not on another? It's a new drive under warranty, but it does work with the right computer and cable, so I can't return it. I'll see what happens tomorrow when I get the new cables.

I had a similiar problem with a WD drive and was told it does make a difference if you plug it into the USB port on the front of the computer or the back of the computer. Using the back is almost a direct connect to the computer and the front USB is an extension of the back USB port. The further you get from the computer, the less power. some drives are pickier than others on the power they need.

I found out this evening an AE-1 and an EOS Rebel G are randomly coming my way with some lenses for the FD mount. I last used a roll of film in the 90s. Should I be more excited about the AE-1 and a FD 50mm f/1.4 or the Rebel where all my EF lenses will mount? Or, is there likely to be no excitement at all?

I've been scanning old negatives off and on over the weekends since back around the past holidays. A lot of memory lane travel, but too a lot of 'boy I could have done that better' observations. Of a couple thousand scanned images, there's only a few that approach my expectations of my current work. I can't go back in time and assess whether it was the equipment, lack of technique / technical know-how, lack of dedication or some combination of these and / or other factors...I've got to think my EF lenses are going to produce cleaner, richer pictures than the Vivitar zoom I was using primarily on a T50 back in the day ...

I really don't know what to expect...

With the wealth of experience and I'm sure people currently using one / both these bodies even today, what are your thoughts?

thanks.

Do know AE-1 was a great camera. Getting the lenses may be a double blessing in that you might be able to use them on a DX camera. As far as film, most likely will have to use speciality store on line. Been told film is making a little comeback but dont know if this is true. If you do use, enjoy the experience and let us know the outcome.

B&H Photo in New York has a lot of 35MM film in stock. Both color and black and white.

I have used Black Rapid system for over a year without a problem. I make a habit of checking to make sure the tripod mounted screw is on tight every time I use my cameras.

We do the same thing. Love the black rapid, it is very comfortable to wear all day.

Yesterday our portraiture class went to a gallery that had two main exhibits...one by Sid Avery (The Art of the Hollywood Snapshot) and the other by Vivian Maier (an amazing street photographer whose work was discovered after her death). This led to an interesting discussion about the difference between "snapshots" and "photographs". A lot of photojournalism and street photography have the casual characteristics of snapshots but clearly there is something that distinguishes them to make them more. I thought I would post this question to learn your thoughts.

Although I don't agree with this, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it... snapshots are shots you take in JPEG, and photographs are shots you Post from raw. I'm encouraged that ignorance has not reared its ugly head yet. :-)

Totally WRONG assumption regarding the JPG vs RAW!

Graham, clear and concise, a very scholarly explanation. I for one will be looking for your future posts. Even those of us who feel we know all the answers benifit from reading something so well presented. Thank you for the thought and effort you put into this.

Look at the one that was under exposed there is more noise than the one shot at 3200 and the colors are not right plus less detail

In your notes you say "PP". What Does PP mean?

Hi David, in case hangman45 misses this question pp, (Post Processing) refers to making adjustments in a program such as Photoshop. .

Thanks for the reply!! I am still confused, and trying to figure this out. Post processing to me means processing after you process. Post means after. Hence after processing. So is there a first processing and then a second processing? Maybe I am not understanding the workflow here. Thanks again.

Something you might want to checkout, is photoshop elements 11. This is what I would consider photoshop CS junior.

Cost from Adobe is $99.00. You can find it online for around $80.00 or less if you google it.

Please forgive my ignorance. I've checked and rechecked the index in my manual but can find no reference to back button focusing. I've been hoping to figure it out from context on UHH threads but I'm not getting anywhere. So, the big dumb question is, what the hell is back button focusing anyway?

Click on the link in my reply above:

Thank you. I read the article. Here's the really dumbass question: which button on the back is the back button? (Nikon D600)

A lot of dumbass questions can be answered by reading your manual.. Page 4 of your manual directs you to the rear of your camera and if you look at item number 12 you will find your answer and the page numbers where the info about this button is located.

personally, i don't believe that B&H photo has the best deals anymore on cameras or gear, regardless of the god fearing on-line godless hours they rightfully choose to keep.

B&H is merely a good starting point for comparing prices. some of them good, and some not so good. try supporting your local camera business' & economy. the real good deals are there right in your own backyard.

Sikh, and you shall find.

If we had a good local camera store, that would be ideal. We have one camera store in our area and he does not carry any new name brand equipment. Why? Because Nikon and Canon want him to order in minimums that he can not afford. We use to have three local camera stores in our town alone. All out of business. Mainly because of digital. No more photo processing or printmaking. It is a shame.

The next timne someone tells you that it's the photographer, not the equipment, remember all the stuff Ansel had available when he went on a shoot. He was a great photographer with great equipment - and lots of it.

In the video it indicates that Ansel took detailed notes of every shot. Does anyone know what ever happened to those notes? I would love to see some of them.

I don't have enough high contrast images of my own to work with and was wondering if any of you would be willing to "donate" your files to help me out. I will email you a completed copy. You will retain all copyrights obviously. This is STRICTLY a school project. If you are willing, just PM me. I don't want to just download peoples images without permission so hence why the post. Thanks in advance for your consideration. I know most of you are much more skilled at this than I am already and have probably already converted your own pictures but I could really use the practice and use for my assignment. Luckily the professor said we can use other peoples photos with permission.
Thanks.

69, I could possibly help you out.
That said, I've never heard of a college class where a professor would allow the use of someone else's material. What sort of subjects do you need?

This has such a sound of a scam. First why would a college class not want you to photograph your own? A professor saying to use someone else's photos? Oh sure, I want to give away my photos for free.
