Praying Mantis hunting and feeding
Thanks for taking a look, the morning I came out it was a beautiful day. I was surprised at how cooperative he/she was.
One Bright Morning this fellow, I believe to be a Brown Thrasher was very busy.
That's a Great Capture!!! I would like to know how you got so close?
Thanks for looking!
Gals and Guys!

I just wish I could get that close to the herons and egrets in my area! Problem is that they can see me 500 feet away.
Nice shots.
I have that problem too, late evenings works for me. I have gotten as close as 50ft. I would trade places with you any day as they are pretty scarce here! Three or four maximum on a given day.

Your shutter speed seems a little too slow for your focal length. Also, I would suggest backing off full zoom. Most lenses do better at shorter focal lengths than full extension. You should be able to hand hold at faster shutter speeds and good light.
Thanks kpmac, I was getting the last of the setting sun and they were very far off! Hard to be sure of focus! Here's a look at what I would consider a much better capture! Of course it was about 17ft. Hand held, 1/125sec, f6.3, 600mm, ISO 800. I seem to get much better shots when I am close.
Hi d-cart24
That shot would make a great, but maddening 500-1000pc Jigsaw puzzle!
Great capture!!

I have the sport model so hopefully I can help..... If you plan to buy the USB dock let me know I accidently purchased two of them (don't ask) so I can sell one to you a little less than retail.
P.M. Me, with what you want for it. Definitely interested!
I 'm using a Sigma 150-600 5-6.3 Contemporary, Nikon D3300. all shots 600mm F.L.
Image 1 and 2 f6.3, 1/125 sec, ISO 800 on a Tripod, Manual Focus.
Image 3 and 4 f6.3, 1/400 sec, ISO 400 on a Tripod, Manual Focus.
Image 5 f6.3, 1/500 sec, ISO 200 Hand Held, Spot Auto Focus.
All images were cropped and PP using PSE 14
Guy, I am moving deeper in to bird photography and wants some ideas on achieving better image quality. Here are the some of the best images I have taken so far. I know that there is lots of room for improvement here. I want suggestions on the best improvements going forward on where I should spend more dollars. Can't afford to spend all the money at once, so some suggestions on where to spend the money first is in order. See current equipment list in my signature.
Wish list
A really solid tripod when fully extended (which is also travel worthy).
PS; LR
1.4x or 2.0x sigma tele-converter or both
Nikon D500 Body
Thanks Guys and Girls!! I agree that its a juvenile black crowned night heron after looking up what y'all have suggested it is. I have heard the unusual bird song so there appear to be multiple birds there. I will try to find and photograph an adult if they are there. I hope they hang around long enough for me to get it. I need/want a new camera body(Nikon D500) and a 1.4x and a 2.0x Teleconverter. Hint, Hint, Christmas is near!!

Very nice, but interesting texture on download, and a yellowish line just off the moon at 4 o'clock. I wonder if the texture is atmospherics, but what PP did you do?
Auto haze and Auto shake filter from PSE 14 on a PSE converted Raw file.
Thanks for the reply.
Thanks Guys
I was not ready when it suddenly appeared. I was setting up to capture some sitting herons when I spooked it. just pure luck that I caught any thing, as my camera was on the tripod with the legs not extended. I shot it hand held with tripod attached and managed to only get one frame.
