I opened the door last spring, and there was this large Mantis on the tree, looking for prey. Her head swiveled at my movement, and I had the distinct impression that I was being evaluated

They are very fascinating Insects. There slow motion stalking of there prey is incredible. It hung around several days.

look here, it might not be a Carolina Mantis. It's wing is a closer match to this one.

I suspect the imported Chinese mantis (Tenodera sinensis): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_mantis This can eat the Carolina species for lunch.
