Guy, I am moving deeper in to bird photography and wants some ideas on achieving better image quality. Here are the some of the best images I have taken so far. I know that there is lots of room for improvement here. I want suggestions on the best improvements going forward on where I should spend more dollars. Can't afford to spend all the money at once, so some suggestions on where to spend the money first is in order. See current equipment list in my signature.

What lens are you using and what were the camera's settings when you took the shots?

I am far, far, far from being an expert, but I sense a soft focus. But depending on the message you are seeking to cobvey, soft focus might not be a downer.

I 'm using a Sigma 150-600 5-6.3 Contemporary, Nikon D3300. all shots 600mm F.L.
Image 1 and 2 f6.3, 1/125 sec, ISO 800 on a Tripod, Manual Focus.
Image 3 and 4 f6.3, 1/400 sec, ISO 400 on a Tripod, Manual Focus.
Image 5 f6.3, 1/500 sec, ISO 200 Hand Held, Spot Auto Focus.
All images were cropped and PP using PSE 14

I have the sport model so hopefully I can help. Did you by chance purchase the USB dock with it so you can update the software. I've noticed a couple of people complaining about the same problem you are experiencing until they correct the software. The other possibility is that your camera is either front or back focusing but looking at the pictures I really can't find the focus point without being able to blow them up to 1:1. If anything if it is the camera I would guess that it may be slightly front focusing. If you plan to buy the USB dock let me know I accidently purchased two of them (don't ask) so I can sell one to you a little less than retail.

Your shutter speed seems a little too slow for your focal length. Also, I would suggest backing off full zoom. Most lenses do better at shorter focal lengths than full extension. You should be able to hand hold at faster shutter speeds and good light.

Thanks kpmac, I was getting the last of the setting sun and they were very far off! Hard to be sure of focus! Here's a look at what I would consider a much better capture! Of course it was about 17ft. Hand held, 1/125sec, f6.3, 600mm, ISO 800. I seem to get much better shots when I am close.
