Eye color and wing markings - may be a female or juvenile night heron - bitterns have a yellow-ish eye, the night herons have red eyes like the one in your image. Also, the bitterns have prominent and wide rufous stripes on the throat and breast, and often a bit of yellow striping above and below the eye. I am not an expert on this by any means, so it is a best guess on my part.

Thanks Guys
I was not ready when it suddenly appeared. I was setting up to capture some sitting herons when I spooked it. just pure luck that I caught any thing, as my camera was on the tripod with the legs not extended. I shot it hand held with tripod attached and managed to only get one frame.

I would call that a juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron. Note that the juvenile yellowish bill turns grey as the bird matures.

Not a bad capture.

Nice shot, BeaverNewby! Too bad it's a little dark.

Thanks Guys and Girls!! I agree that its a juvenile black crowned night heron after looking up what y'all have suggested it is. I have heard the unusual bird song so there appear to be multiple birds there. I will try to find and photograph an adult if they are there. I hope they hang around long enough for me to get it. I need/want a new camera body(Nikon D500) and a 1.4x and a 2.0x Teleconverter. Hint, Hint, Christmas is near!!

Plenty of adults here - juvies also.

Good luck with your Christmas list, but unfortunately, this is UHH - not Santa.com.

I shoot raw, it pretty easy to lighten. Here is a revision. I know some of the PP Pros around here can do better, take a look tell me What you think.
