I don't use it for custom settings as much as a way to get to certain items more quickly without having to search the entire menu. It just gives me a way to get to the things I want to adjust or change a little faster and easier.

I don't use them. I shoot in manual mode 99% of the time and I make adjustments specific to the situation. I suppose if I always used an identical setting I would consider custom settings. These modes are for those that are always in a hurry. I find that my best images are made in a methodical manner with forethought. I slow down and think about what I am doing.

I am on the road a lot for pleasure travel. I set up my camera on the dashboard using a beanbag and remotely trigger different sights as I travel. I have used both tethered and radio remote for this and I enjoy putting together slide shows of these pictures. Because I am driving I can't use BBF and let the camera focus through the lens.

Are you referring to a tethered remote?

I use it for things I tend to change quite often. I have metering (Matrix), Focus point illumination, White balance, and AF activation to allow me to move quickly between BBF and lens focus (when I use a remote).

Can you share your experience with the Shooting/Custom settings banks? How do you use them and what common settings you use?

Someone here posted this link and I found it to be extremely helpful. http://regex.info/blog/photo-tech/focus-chart#features

After years of shooting, I noticed a couple of lens are not producing as sharp pics as they were years ago. My Nikon 18-105 kit lens bought around 5 years ago gave me excellent photos over the years, but seems a tad out of focus, no matter what I do.

How do I calibrate or reset my lens ?
BTW - thanks for the valuable advice over the years.
Cheers mate.

Also check with your credit card company. Nikon did a $300 price drop just after I bought mine and my credit card (Citi Thank You) did a search at my prompting and gave me the $300 back.

I think this is for a limited time, but the price of the D750 has dropped to $1,999.95. I have one due to arrive today - at the old price. I'll call the dealer when they open. They'll either give me credit, or I'll return it.

I have the Feisol 3471. It is tall enough to not need a center post (I am 6' 2" ) and has large strong legs. They have a more expensive model that is even lighter but this one cost me $414 with no center post.

Seriously considering upgrading to a carbon fiber tripod. Care not one whet for the center post, so it will be removed immediately if not sooner. Will be used primarily for DSLR with medium weight zooms(70-200, 100-400)
Needs to be:
a)relatively light, I do a lot of hiking/traveling
b)minimum support of +- 9#
c)positive adjustments
d)ability to get very low
e)height of 60+"
f)preferably less than $5C.

Also looking for a plate to convert from a manfrotto to arca swiss.

Would appreciate opinions based on first hand experience.

I have this lens and I love it. I use it at high school basketball and volleyball games and it is a winner. I also use it in the house when the grandchildren come over and I have never been disappointed. It is very sharp.

Has anyone experience with this lens? It has received may glowing reports from reviewers but I tend to believe users first and people who have a financial interest last. :-D

I know you asked about a zoom but I would question what time of day you will be shooting. Gyms typically have large windows higher up that help tremendously during daylight, but many of these gyms also have abysmal lighting when used in the evenings. I found that I prefer to get down to floor level and use either an 85mm or 50mm 1.8 lens. I feel it gives me better options to freeze the action.

With grandkids involved in numerous indoor sports, volleyball, basketball, wrestling etc. I find myself wanting a fast medium zoom. First thought is the Canon 24-70 F 2.8. Really pricey, but we are talking grandkids, plus I can see a lot of other uses for it.

Any thoughts? Anyone have a personal review?

Also, the list has the serial numbers so if anything ever did end up missing I would have the numbers to immediately turn over to the police.

That is a good idea as you can keep track over time.

Since this will allow you to create statistics, do you use this in order to discard what you know you will not use considering your past records?

I don't really have enough equipment where this is an issue. It does allow me the peace of mind to know what I have with me on a trip. I email myself a copy of the list just to make sure I have everything with me as I move from place to place.

I have all of my equipment already listed in an Excel spreadsheet. It is then easy to create a new column for a specific trip and check off the equipment I am taking with me.

Before I travel I take a picture of the equipment I take with it so that if something happens I have an exact record of what is missing.

I am currently preparing for three months in EU so I am gathering what I will take, take a picture, divide the stuff between my luggage (accessories, cheap heavy stuff) and my carry-on backpack...

What method do you use if any?

(I did not mention the part of asking my wife to have some stuff in own luggage)...  :hunf:

Silica bags are good idea, but where to get them? This is why we thought of using rice as a substitute as one does for salt when at the beach. As for dark bag, why? Mold loves the dark. We thought putting a lamp shining into viewfinder might help. Anyway, wife and son went to visit and meet in Lima, Peru to tour Machu Pichu so they will bring camera home for Dad to deal with this Saturday. Dad bought it so he should fix it, right? Forget I didn't get to go on trip due to prepping for being Plaintiff's counsel in the biggest lawsuit of my life. Such fun, such fun.

Shouldn't need to hold the shutter release button at all for focus. If you have set up the back button correctly that is all you need.
tnwaltz wrote:
Bjprovo, thank you. Are you saying I have to hold in the BBF button and the shutter release button at the same time and keep them held in during shooting in order to get continuous frames?

If you are using BBF you need to continually hold it down to maintain focus on a moving object. Do not release it while you are taking pictures.
