Can you share your experience with the Shooting/Custom settings banks? How do you use them and what common settings you use?

I went through the manual for 810, which explained what each function does, the decided whether I wanted to use that setting or not. It's up to you to decide how you want your 810 to perform and what you like as a photographer.

It's an unbelievable camera. Learn how to use it, and you will be much happier than relying on someone else's methods.

Best of luck and skill.

Rick

Thanks for the feedback. I love the experimentation aspect of learning to use a camera. I'm interested in how you use the banks on the D810.

I use it for things I tend to change quite often. I have metering (Matrix), Focus point illumination, White balance, and AF activation to allow me to move quickly between BBF and lens focus (when I use a remote).

The camera business must be booming in Montana. MT Shooter isn't here as much. He usually has good input on the D800 series.

I completely understand you questioning about the shooting and custom banks.
Using the Nikon manual that comes with the camera is not very helpful in explaining certain techniques .
If you get David Busch's Nikon D810 book for about $24, you'll completely be able to understand how to set up and use the banks.
This book explains this camera to the smallest detail and when you're finish reading it you'll know your camera like a pro.
Hope this helps, good luck. Don

I set mine up as: Landscape, Portrait, Sports, Family. Works well for me.

Are you referring to a tethered remote?

I don't use them. I shoot in manual mode 99% of the time and I make adjustments specific to the situation. I suppose if I always used an identical setting I would consider custom settings. These modes are for those that are always in a hurry. I find that my best images are made in a methodical manner with forethought. I slow down and think about what I am doing.

I am one those who tends to get in a hurry. But when I get in a hurry, I go to manual...and usually overlook something. That is why I start with the correct custom bank to begin with...and then make adjustments as needed. (I'm not as young as I used to be. :D )

I am on the road a lot for pleasure travel. I set up my camera on the dashboard using a beanbag and remotely trigger different sights as I travel. I have used both tethered and radio remote for this and I enjoy putting together slide shows of these pictures. Because I am driving I can't use BBF and let the camera focus through the lens.
