Doing research several years ago I found Verbatim discs were one of the best brands of discs. Sam's club usually has them.

Although there is no way to know the longevity, I find that Sony DVDs are excellent quality, and that TDK DVDs occasionally cannot be detected by the burner on board my Mac.

Otherwise, over the years I have found there is always some reason to rescan photos to bring them up to the latest standards. So this means new DVDs are being burned every ten or less years.

As for saving images from digital cameras, that is another question but it seems to be so easy to burn a new copy of a DVD that no one would have to worry about the shelf life of existing DVDs.

They used to say that storage media goes out of production so fast that everyone will be stuck with their floppies and Zip Disks. How hard is it to copy an old format disc when you switch to a new format? The last computer I had that had a floppy drive also had a DVD burner plus I had an outboard Zip drive. When the time came to update, everything got sent to DVD.

Does anyone know if I can disable the video record button on the EM-10? I keep accidentally hitting it.
Thanks

That seems to be a common fault on many if not all Olympus cameras. Go to CUSTOM MENU (Gears Icon) on your MENU. Select the second in the list , BUTTON, and find the Video Record button. You can change the function there. I believe it is on Page 90 in your manual.

When I bought the E-M1, the staff in the store asked me what lens I wanted to buy with it, and they were a bit surprised when I told them "None!"
Instead, I got the adapter to use the 4/3 lenses. The two I worked with in those early weeks, were the 14-54mm and the 50-200mm. Both work just fine, and all the features are still there. Because I still use the E-5 as well (mostly for tripod work, 'cause it's a heavy beast), twice now, I had the 14-54 lens on the E-5 when I also wanted it on the E-M1.
So my first purchase after the camera was the 12-40mm M4/3 lens.
I've also checked out the flash I use with the E-5, FL-50R and as a remote flash, it works great.
After I get the 40-150mm lens in November, next on my wish-list is the M 4/3, 1.4 teleconverter. That will give me a reach of 210mm - should be enough for now ;-)

A couple of months ago, I bought David Busch's book for the E-M1 - Excellent book, but dry reading. So I tend to use it as a reference book.
Just yesterday, someone here on the Hog recommended Gary Friedman's book for this camera, it's only $20 and is easy to read:
http://www.friedmanarchives.com/OlympusE-M1/index.htm
It comes with a separate "booklet" for the version 2.0 firmware update.
Also, it being downloaded as a pdf file, and epub file AND a mobi file, you can read it wherever you want, or even print it out!
Thank you, to whoever made that recommendation!

Thanks for your observations. Reading between the lines I think I detect that you would rather go with m4/3 lenses on the E-M1 just as a matter of practicality. I've thought about that as both my Leica 4/3 lenses are BIG when mounted on a m4/3 body. My plan is to stay with m4/3 but get a used E-5 body to get some good use out of those spectacular Leica lenses.

I do, however, ALWAYS have the lenshood on when I'm outside, and both inside and outside I have the camera strap over my right shoulder with the camera hanging on my left hip.
For my much heavier E-5 camera I have an Op/Tech bino-harness - a strap that crosses on my back and comes forward over both shoulders - nicely dividing the weight of the camera.
The only filters I use are a circular polarizing filter or an ND filter but even with those I have the lens hood on as well.

Seeing that you have an E-5 I was wondering if you have tried your 4/3 lenses on the E-M1 and how that works out? I have a an E-3 with two Lumix Leica lenses but have yet to buy an E-M1.

Actually, the "Cloud" component the way I see it is about LICENSING the software.... instead of entering a license code during installation, the software checks back with Adobe every now and then to assure that you have continued to pay your subscription.

Updating software with a new version and/or patches have been available as downloads for some time now.

I would expect to see that software sold on DVD to disappear, or at least be relegated to special request in the near future.
Yes, the cloud does refer to a subscription, as long as it does not increase too much over a few years it remains a good deal vs. buying the version outright and the cost to upgrade as new versions come out.

I am sure at some point it will become questionable due to cost, it is inevitable I guess.

It pays to always look at alternatives :)

As a licensed user of an Adobe product you may still be able to get the $10 per month price with a confirmation that the price will never go up! That's the deal I got when I signed up for CC. The best thing to do is to call them up and sign up with a rep over the phone to check if you can still get that offer.

Place in a different folder, rename, then move?

That won't work. I tried it and the new file overwrote the old file entirely. These are DNG files so there is no sidecar XMP file.

Brian, I am assuming you have 36 or less images to scan and add the metadata. I would assume that there is common metadata in each image. I would also assume that there are some images with different metadata.

For the common metadata you can create a metadata template in Bridge. Once created you can select all of the images in bridge and then apply the template. In Bridge click Tools>Create Metadata Template. Once created it is accessed from the File Info dialog box. Look at the bottom of the box right next to the preferences tab. You will have to click the arrow to find your saved template name.

For the images with different metadata you will need to apply it separately to the image. But how long can that take?

Metadata common to all the images is no problem, that can easily be handled in Bridge. There is also really no problem in copying the unique data from the old slides to the new, one by one, field by field, but I really have quite a few rolls of slides to do, not just one or two.

I do have a template to handle the boilerplate info such as name, address, etc.

When it comes down to it, it takes 15 minutes to scan each frame and during that time I can adjust levels on the previous scans and transfer the metadata, field by field. The problem with that is all the old frames must be renamed so that I can have them in the same folder as the new ones in order to easily handle them in Bridge. Not that big a deal but a somewhat inelegant solution.

Brian, I Googled for "transfer metadata to new scans" - but all I could find was how to fiddle with existing metadata.

Are the metadata attached to each image? And I'm thinking that you've added things like location, or keywords, that kind of thing?

One "procedure" comes to mind, and I'd copy an image with its metadata to a different location first, then try it:
Scan the same image again, and give it exactly the same name as the "old" image, then overwrite the olde with the new. Now check the metadata: Is everything still there?

If I'm completely off-track, maybe you could post a sample of an image with metadata intact, by checking the 'save original' box? That way we can see what you have, and play with it as well.

Thanks for putting some thought into this. Yes the metadata is attached to each file, these are DNG files created using Vuescan and a Canon US4000 scanner. The metadata was added in Bridge and in most cases the "Description" is quite different from file to file.

I tried your suggestion of scanning the new file with the same name as the old file. Either Vuescan or my Mac wouldn't do it and renumbered the file to the next consecutive number. In other words the new scan of 196811_02.dng became 196811_03.dng. Yes, I remembered to remove the "+" sign in Vuescan's naming convention.

I need to rescan a roll of slides for improved quality. The old scans already exist with all the pertinent metadata in a folder. I seem to remember reading that there is a way to transfer the metadata from all the old scans to all the new scans in one operation. Is that so? And if so, how do I do that? I am running a Mac with the latest OS using PS CC and Bridge. Have not had the guts to attempt LR although I have it.

Thanks for any help,
Brian

My next computer will definitely have an sd card slot.
I am unable (probably due to my own ignorance) to do anything with an sd card on my iMac computer.

I don't understand this. My 7 year old iMac doesn't have an SD Reader so I have a SanDisk card reader plugged into a USB port. I always download my photos by removing the card from the camera and placing it in the reader. In about two seconds it pops up on my Desktop as a device. I also have a FlashCard reader for my Olympus E-3. Same drill.

When are the best times to consider the use of a polarizing filter?

Something I've known for a while but never put into use until recently is that a polarizer will remove reflections on a glass window. On New York's Roosevelt Island Tram everyone wants to shoot pics of the scenery but you are surrounded by curved glass windows. I tried using the polarizer and it worked nicely in removing the reflections.

Doesn't drag and drop MOVE them instead of copy them? It sure MOVES them on a Mac....

I doesn't move them to an external drive when using a Mac, it copies them. It only moves them if you drag them to a different place on the same drive. At least that is my experience with my Mac and two external drives. The same goes for dragging files from an SD card to my internal drive, it goes through the process of making copies and leaves the files on the card intact.

Hello. Question that has no doubt been asked before.
How do I download photos directly from my camera to an external hard drive?
I don't want to go 'via' the computer because the storage is too limited to cope with all the megapixels!
Camera: Nikon D800
Computer: MacBook Pro
External Hard Drives: various.
Thanks for your help Ugly Hedgehogs!

And just for a bit of enjoyment: Black-shouldered Kite 'shot' with Tamron 150-600.

Pretty much reiterating what others have written, using a desktop Mac - I plug my SD card into my Mac and it appears as a drive on my desktop in a couple of seconds. I click on that SD drive, go to the folder with photos and drag it to my external drive, which is open in another window. Actually I drag it to my Download Folder, as I have the habit of taking in anything new to that location.

200 is a bit tight for a quality camera...if you could squeeze another $100 in there you could get an Olympus xz-2.

Where at overseas are you going and what types of things do you plan on taking photos of? If you are going inside of some Of the cathedrals, keep in mind some/most won't allow you to use a flash or tripod, therefore, you'll want something with fast aperture (around f2) or built in stabilization (preferably both).

This is a camera that is simple enough to take photos right out if the box, but offers some advanced features to grow into.

A bit cheaper and smaller...I use one for sitework at my company:

I like both of these cameras. I have a Canon S100, the earlier version, and recently bought a refurbed Olympus XZ-2. The Canon will slip into a shirt pocket but the XZ-2 is a bit heavier. I can fit it in a jacket or a cargo pants pocket. Both take excellent photos and have RAW capability. Also, both are very good in low light situations.

FYI - If your raw files are DNG, there are no sidecar files. Changes are either stored in a catalog as in Lightroom or stored as metadata with the DNG file. The raw file itself is not changed, just the metadata that is attached to the DNG raw file.

Here's a DNG question. I have my slides scanned as DNG files and have added metadata to them in Bridge. All this was done before LR, and I haven't ventured into LR yet. Where is the metadata stored right now? Is it imbedded in my DNGs? What affect will LR have on this Metadata?
