I am purchasing an external hard drive exclusively for my photos.
Is it an easy process? I have never done it before (obviously).

What system do you have PC or MAC? What backup software do you use? What PP program do you use LR PSCC ect.

A lot more info would be helpful.

How to do this is clearly a software issue. I am also interested in knowing what software handles backing up by file type.

But, you are probably about to get a lot of advice on hardware and the cloud or not the cloud and on site vs. off site, even though this is primarily a software issue.

Lets see... an external drive for just your photos... is that just to backup your photos, or just to store your photos?

There IS a difference ;)

To back up my photos to my WD passport external drive I just drag and drop across from the window showing my photos to the window showing my external drive. I don't use any backup software.

Doesn't drag and drop MOVE them instead of copy them? It sure MOVES them on a Mac....

in Windows, the system assumes if you are draging to a new drive (real or virtual) you are making a copy.

just in case you use windows, plug in your external hard drive, then go to "pictures" high light the folders you want to move {left click mouse on a folder or hold down "Ctrl" button and left click to highlight multiple files} right click on a highlighted folder/folders and either click on "cut" if you want to "move" the folder or "copy" if you just want to make a copy of folders!
then open external hard drive and either make a folder for you files or just right click mouse then click on "paste" and wait for the files to move, this could take a while depending on how big the file/files are
good luck

Drag & Drop is not a backup solution, and the OP asked how to "BACKUP" so it would be very helpful to know what system they use, software used for PP, etc.

I think you will find it is a backup, I do it all the time with my photos. I have them on my PCs hard drive and a backup on my external drive using this very method.

I think some people make things out to be harder than they should be.

It must depend on the drive, and how it is connected... lots of people used to LOSE entire folders on network drives because they mistakenly drug the top folder somewhere..... lots of support calls wondering where their network folder went - it was there a minute ago....

I did just confirm that on my Mac, depending on which drive I drag too it will copy or move, so I misspoke.

Yes, in your case it is.

What you are doing is copying, or moving, this is NOT a backup solution. IT does not take into account any changes at the destination, it does not look at the archive bit, It does not remove deleted files, it does NOTHING for a backup solution as the OP asked for.

Well, in that case, Copy & Paste should work.
Under Windows drag & drop does copy the files to the folder you want them, whether that is on the same drive or a different drive, but I will often copy & paste now, because of (hopefully temporary) vision problems.

I thought a backup was a copy of the original in case the original was lost somehow, which is exactly what I have.
