I am a mechanical engineer and very interested in taking good pictures; children, grandchildren, pets, outdoors, etc.. I even invested in a drone to take awesome pictures above it all. Started with a Pentax SLR and now have a Nikon D5200.

Welcome to the forum; the more engineers the better. I have similar interests and am an aerospace engineer, though I don't have a camera equipped drone (a term I dislike BTW). As I noted in a previous post: I am a model airplane hobbyist as well as a photography hobbyist; more of the former than the latter actually. A couple of things regarding the "drone." Follow the rules and be safe first and foremost. You are required to register with the FAA and have your registration number on anything that you fly that weighs 250 or more grams. I highly recommend that you join the recognized community based organization for model aircraft flying, the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). The AMA website is: www.modelaircraft.org/

I am a long time amateur photographer. I recently bought a Nikkormat FT2 to replace the one I had in the 60s. I also have a couple of Pentax cameras and lenses. i like to take photos of interesting faces and animals. I also have a Phantom 3 Standard quadcopter that I recently acquired for aerial photography. I look forward to the great advice and experience from the UglyHedgehog forums.

I finally “cut the cord” with my cable provider. One of the most frustrating things I do is take the shot of a lifetime and get nothing but tail feathers.

The second is trying to find something to watch on one of 200 channels. Sorry, but I am tired of paying to watch “Cup Cake Wars”, “Keeping Up with the Kardashians”, “Little Housewife’s of Atlanta” and Bulgarian soccer. And I am paying to the tune of about $100 a month.

I also cut the landline. Don’t need it, the security system is cellular and all I got on the landline was 10 robo calls a day.
So now I have...

Netflix $10 a month.
Amazon Prime comes with my membership.
Hulu $7.99 a month.
Curiosity Stream $2.99 a month.

Grand total $21 a month for almost 500,000 movies and TV episodes.

Just wondering if anyone out there has done the same.

We can't get anything over the air with an antenna. After constant hassles and horrible customer service from Comcast, we switched to DirecTV about 5 years ago and have had great service. We have a higher-end package, as I want to get sports channels for racing and the Warriors and love National Geographic. Since they were purchased by AT&T, we got a break on our cell phone bill, since we already had AT&T. We have kept our landline, as it is used for our home alarm system and if the power goes out (which is rare), the phone works.

The above white building is the house where my paternal grandmother lived in when she was girl and young woman before she came to The United States.

Somewhere in my file cabinets, I have pictures of The Gardens and Grounds of Ravelo. I will look for them when I have time.

All of the above pictures were taken when I was in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Shenandoah AD-26 a repair ship; I was 21 years old. Pictures and memories, are wonderful.

Beautiful place. We took the train from Rome to the hill country in southern Italy to visit family in 1973. We had lunch in Salerno while waiting for the local train to Potenza. We haven't been back yet, but we will. That was part of an 11 week trip that took us all over Europe.

Right on! I drive a 911 Carerra 4S with a 6-speed manual and an IC engine of course.

I am readily resistant to battery driven cars and cars that drive themselves; if I'm behind the wheel, I'll do the driving, thanks.

Best regards, Ricker

I don't want driver aids either, except anti-lock brakes. I rarely use my cruise control. We did a 4,000 mile road trip in 11 days and I probably used the cruise control less then 25 miles of it. There is something about a perfectly rev-matched double clutched downshift (especially if done heel and toe) while turning in to a corner, clipping the apex and then accelerating out of it. I drive a Mazda 3 Grand Touring with a 5 speed manual with Bridgestone S-04s and Konis. A few years ago I went for a drive on one of the great roads, CA 128 from Winters, through the Napa Valley and then all the way to CA 1. My son in law went along in his 911 Carerra and our "quick comfort speed" was the same; he was surprised at how well the Mazda handled. Of course I was pushing a little harder than he was, but we were both having fun.

It's a long boring story, but besides the Panasonic with 14-140 mm, I now also have an Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II M4/3 with Olympus M.Zuiko 75-300mm

This combo will be for more distant and moving subjects and the crop duster gave me quite the workout! These are definitely not as sharp as the non-moving dandelion close-up I used as test yesterday

Shutter priority at 1/1000 sec, auto-ISO, edits from raw.

Thanks for viewing!

The only time I want a battery for a prime mover is in my RC airplanes. I enjoy driving a responsive fun to drive car. Give me an IC powered car with a manual transmission. Just say no to CVTs. I want 3 pedals. Save the manuals!

Why do people make taking photos so involved and complicated. I shot jpeg 99%of the time pay attention when taking the shot maybe bracket things a little and maybe some cropping. Done. Save it to my external hard drive and a cd. No spending all my time adjusting what my camera has captured. I can't get into all this PP stuff. Most of time a photos not good is it's out of focus and you can't fix that.

That's primarily what I do. I shoot a lot, especially at the sports car races where I typically shoot around 2,500 photos per day (I took 4,000 in a day recently). It takes a lot of time to just sort through the images to get the best ones. I have the Adobe CC, but haven't had enough free time to learn it yet. I also have other hobbies, I teach part time, and have other things to do, so it's about life balance/time trade-offs. The key is to enjoy doing what you do; there is no best way to do things.

If they got all of the bad drivers off of the roads there would never be any traffic. The licensing requirements are pathetic; they should call it what it really is: a transportation appliance operators permit.

Really nice.

My wife once flew from Burbank Airport to Lake Tahoe on PSA's last remaining Electra, the only aircraft that had high altitude, short field capabilities. As I met her at the gate, I mentioned that that aircraft was last build the year she was born. It was sometimes in the 80s.

The photo is of a Model 10 Electra, the kind that Amelia Earhart vanished in. PSA flew the L-188 Electra, a 4 engine turboprop that was modified into the P-3 Orion ASW aircraft. Two completely different aircraft.

Beautiful photo BTW.

A quick show of hands please. How many photographers here are also musicians? I find it interesting that so many people who are "artistic" often are so in more than one discipline. Ansel Adams was also a classically trained pianist, you have Ralph Gibson, and more recently people like Brian Adams, Nikki Sixx (no joke!), and Graham Nash. All are well known musicians and are also Photogs. My father was a photographer and jazz drummer who must have rubbed off on me because I'm also a musician in addition to being a photographer. My eldest son, who plays multiple instruments, also has a keen eye for photography.
I'm sure that there have been many studies on this, but I'm just wondering how many in our little community practice both arts.

I've been taking photos since childhood. I can't play an instrument or hold a tune. I took accordion lessons for a couple of years at around age 8, but that was the extent of my musical endeavors. I do enjoy music though, primarily classic rock, jazz and blues. I'm a semi-retired aerospace engineer and I design, build and fly radio control airplanes, I'm also a "car guy." I also do some woodworking. I really enjoy the creative part of model airplanes and woodworking.

I think the key here is the link between photography and doing something creative, whether it be music, painting, designing something or whatever.

I remember the U-2 incident and Francis Gary Powers, the pilot who ejected after being hit with a missile. After Powers bailed out, the U-2 glided to earth thus enhancing the Soviet's propaganda efforts. Frank Powers was a friend and I spent many hours with him after he was repatriated. My boss Colonel P. Economy was Powers logistical support officer in Peshawar when he launched his mission. The CIA did much to discredit Powers after he was shot down. Powers wrote a book "Operation Oversight", circa 1960-70, out of print now. A great read. Powers was a true American hero. He died flying a helicopter for a radio station in LA - alleged the helicopter "ran out of gas".
The U-2 mission was entirely different than the SR-71 both then and now (U-2 is now called the "TR-__" aircraft. SR-71 was retired circa 1999.

TR = Tactical Reconnaissance, SR = Strategic Reconnaissance, U = Utility

Two of my favorite airplanes, which as an aerospace engineer I have a deep appreciation for. BTW, on its retirement flight from Los Angeles California to Washington DC, the SR-71 broke the transcontinental record and was then put in the Smithsonian Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Museum at Dulles Airport. The flight covered 2,299.67 miles in 1 hour, 4 minutes and 20 seconds, for an average speed of 2,145MPH. A remarkable airplane from the genius of Kelly Johnson and the Lockheed Skunk Works.
