Thanks everybody for your input. My camera uses both SD and Cf cards so I ordered some larger cards to take. I'm also bringing a small laptop and external drive for backup. I would hate to lose the photos from a once in a lifetime experience. Thanks again.

Hi all, question on travel to Peru. Reading the entry custom info they state that you can only bring in 4 memory cards or pay 12% duty on the others. Heading there next week and my camera takes two cards (i shoot one raw and one JPEG and usually backup to my laptop and save the card as the second backup (I usually bring 10-12 cards). Anybody had any problems with more than 4 cards or any other issues? Thanks in advance.

Welcome Stephen, another suggestion is to use single shot vs continuous H. continuous will rapid fire your shots.

I got one on amazon for $15, 3.5 dia and it had a clear ball stand (square bottom) which fit in my tripod ball head mount. I'm still playing with it but here is one

FYI the bird in the last photo is red-billed tropicbird. Sorry you weren't happy with your trip. Ours was almost a disaster due to the boat losing one of its engine for awhile and some rain. Fortunately we had a super guide who made the captain go back to places we missed so we got some good photos. Apparently the captain had to get permission to go back to the island and pay again so the owner lost a few bucks.

It seems to me that several themes have run thought the postings on the "hog" in the past:
1. Tele-extenders reduce the quality of the photo (usually 30% degradation is quoted)
2. That you must use a tripod when using a "long" lens to get sharp photos
3. That shooting from a boat will blur the photo due to engine vibrations
4. Traveling with photography gear requires a hard shell Pelican case, etc.

I would like to produce evidence that none of the above have to be true. Part of me wonders why I bother, because "a man convinced against his will, is of the same opinion still", but I'll still try.

I just returned from South America & the Galapagos Islands which was a very disappointing trip. I did not see what I expected. The Park service controls where you go, so maybe it was just bad luck, but disappointing none the less. Most of the advice that I got for the Galapagos was that long lenses were not needed, as everything was so close. I hoped that was true, but took my 300mm and extenders just in case.

I travel extensively with my gear, and use think tank products which have proved very adequate. Normally I use two of their large roller bags, but this time I "went light" and took one roller bag and a large back pack. I have trucked this stuff to more than 80 countries with no damage. I do not check the bags, but place them overhead as carryons. I am 76 years old, and it is getting tough to lift them up, but I make it, so far.

All shots attached are with the 300mm f2.8 with the version III 2X tele-extender and all are hand held. The hawk shot was from a boat with the engine running, the others were walking. No tripod. Download the attached files and check them out. I think they are pretty darn sharp!

About tele-extenders: There are good ones and bad ones. I understand that many readers have limited budgets and try to save on gear; and I have been there. I am blessed that I now have the gear that I want, and high end tele-extenders are very good. Check out Art Morris's photos at birdsasart.com and see his results with tele-extenders. Don't lump all tele-extenders into the same group.

In stead of saying you can't do this or that; concentrate on learning better technique, learn how the pros do it, and get better with your photography.

Keep shooting!
Bill
It seems to me that several themes have run though... (show quote)

I will travel there this fall wonder on lens to take, plan on two bodies, canon 6d and 7 d mark2, I have canon 70-200 2.8l is, 70-200 f4, 300mm f4 l is, and 100-400l is. Want to travel light, also have 24-105 f4 is, in your travels there and considering small boat and extensive hiking, and being 70 yrs old, what is your opinions
Thanks
Frank
I was in the Galapagos Islands in March this year. I carried two cameras pretty much the whole time, I had my 24-105 on my 5D and my 100-400 on my 7D II. The wildlife is use to people but you have to stay on the trails which made the 100-400 come in handy. I probably used the 7D 90% of the time. the zodiaks are usually wet on the bottom so a big zip lock bag for your backpack bottom is a must. Nobody in our group had a problem getting in and out of the zodiaks (paganos), our crew and guide were very helpful. Hiking wasn't too bad, a few rocky areas and slippery spots, most of my trip was on the beaches. Enjoy your trip, be safe and post a few pictures when you get back. Don't know if your into snorkeling but you might want to bring a waterproof P&S the sea life was awesome. Enjoy your trip, be safe and post a few pictures when you get back PS I'm only 67 and here's a few photos to wet you appetite, a blue footed boobie and a zodiak chasing the rainbow

I hope this catches you before you leave. I just got back from Equador and the Islands (march 26th). In Quito try to get to the equator museum, it was awesome. The elevation in Quito is around 9,000 feet so drink lots of water and walk slowly. If you go to a lodge you can use a flash on the birds (helped enhance the colors). I mainly used a 100-400 lens on a crop sensor (140-560mm) on the Islands. The wildlife was use to the people but you had to stay on the trails and the reach helped. I did use a 24-105 mm on a full framed camera for some landscape shots. It did rain a few days and we got caught on an island so bring a rain coat and something to protect you backpack n camera (the old shower cap came in handy),also the pangas (dingys) had some water on the decks. Bring lots of cards, I took over 5000 pictures. If your rooms are air-conditioned on the yacht make sure you leave your camera in the dining hall so the lenses don't fog up. I was on the Solitary George and our excellent guide was Willo. The snorkling was just awesome. Enjoy your trip and post some pictures when you get back. John S.

Your choice sounds like a good plan, with my 7D i'll be able to get a little more reach if I need it. 16-35, 24-105, 100-400. Probable leave the 70-200 and 1.4 converter at home. I've got a panasonic P&S that shoots pretty good underwater and the cell phone. I hear you on the bag limits, I was told 44 lb bag limit to Islands. Thanks for the reply and enjoy your trip.

Hello John
I am also going there later this month and will be taking my 5D, 1DX, 16-35, 24-105, 100-400, and an underwater Olympus for snorkeling, and cell phone for those moments when lugging cameras like on board ship may not be handy. Weight restrictions for baggage can be an issue.
I would enjoy hearing of your trip and what you find best.

Can we ask, What lens' do you have to choose from? Or are you looking to rent one for the trip?? My travel experiences make me believe you will want one of at least 300-400mm. You will appreciate having the reach!

I was just there in November, getting the lights is not a given as the weather changes every 5 minutes (clouds). Out of the 10 days we were there only two days were good. Know your camera so you can operate it in the dark so you don't need a light. Try to focus on a bright star (live view), f 2.8 or lower and adjust the ISO to get 6-8 seconds shutter speed so the stars are pin point. good luck and happy shooting, Iceland is an amazing place, enjoy and post.
