lens suggestions for trip to Quito, Ecuador rain forest, and the Galapagos Islands
Heading out next week and looking for suggestions on lenses to take from you all travelers. I shoot Canon and will be bringing my 7D mark II and 5D mark IV. Thanks for your help.
Hello John
I am also going there later this month and will be taking my 5D, 1DX, 16-35, 24-105, 100-400, and an underwater Olympus for snorkeling, and cell phone for those moments when lugging cameras like on board ship may not be handy. Weight restrictions for baggage can be an issue.
I would enjoy hearing of your trip and what you find best.

I went to the Galapagos in 2014. I brought a 5D III, and a 1D Mark IV. I used a 300mm f/2.8 on the 1D most of the time, and used a 16-35 f/2.8, 24-70 f/2.8 and my 70-200 f/2.8 on the 5D. Yes, it was a lot to bring but between me and my sister, I was able to put all of it in carry on. I used a double strap every time we ventured over to one of the islands. I'd insure your equipment for the trip. I dropped my 5D and caused $800 damage. It still worked though. I waited until I got home to have it fixed.
Can we ask, What lens' do you have to choose from? Or are you looking to rent one for the trip?? My travel experiences make me believe you will want one of at least 300-400mm. You will appreciate having the reach!
I have a 24-105,70-200,100-400, 1.4 converter (all Canon) and a sigma 18-300mm=

Your choice sounds like a good plan, with my 7D i'll be able to get a little more reach if I need it. 16-35, 24-105, 100-400. Probable leave the 70-200 and 1.4 converter at home. I've got a panasonic P&S that shoots pretty good underwater and the cell phone. I hear you on the bag limits, I was told 44 lb bag limit to Islands. Thanks for the reply and enjoy your trip.

I'd be taking a macro lens-- but that may not be your thing-- with a caveat: vacation is not the time to learn a new genre. There's too much to see and you don't want to be so focused on the trees that you miss the forest. In other words: have a great time and enjoy what you see and what you photograph. It's not always the same thing...

Galapagos Islands? Lucky you!!! For rain forest a good wide angle and close-up capable lens, for Galapagos a mid tele (because the animals allow you to get very close)! Take as many as you can!!!! Don't leave your tripod behind! Maybe you'll find some time to shoot a few macros as well, take some flashes and most of all, have the time of your life!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have not had a Hepatitis A vaccination, get one before you go - if your PCP does not have it your local health department probably will. This is not the Hep B vaccine now required for kids. Hepatitis A you get from food. A very big problem for travelers to the Andes.
24-105, 100-400, 1.4x (use sparingly), add a wide angle like the Tamron 10-24mm, and be sure to take a flash. Also, I would add a micro as suggested. Substitute photo gear for clothes (be minimalist, you can always wash clothes), such as a tripod in your checked luggage. The others should be in a carry-on backpack.

I returned fro the Galapagos/Quito two weeks ago. I shoot Olympus OMD EM1 and due to how close I was able to get to the wildlife the lens that I used most was a 12-40mm f2.8; I occasionally used my 40-150mm f2.8. I did not use my 1.4x TC or my brand new 300mm f4 lens. Same went for Quito street photography.
A friend did that trip and before visited the famous market at Ontavalo up in the mountains...very colorful individuals, fabrics, grains, products of agriculture for sale and she took some good shots of them with smaller lenses. One of some grains just to illustrate. Not my shot. Her compositions were good but she was not good at post so asked me to do that for her when she returned. Some good shots all around. Not even sure what camera she shot them with. A dslr I believe but more generic lenses.
Most responses forget the most important piece of gear: a waterproof bag of some sort for those wet landings in the Galapagos.
Enjoy.
We just returned. I went with MFT and took the Panasonic Leica 100-400 to use with the Panasonic GX8. And used the Panasonic 35-100 f2.8 or 12-35 f2.8 for everything else. You will need the Canon 100-400 to do justice to this trip. The small Olympus for snorkeling and diving is the best choice.
See attachments.

I read about waterproof bags before we left for the Galapagos. I did not bring one as my cameras and lenses are waterproof. But that being said we were on the Celebrity Xpedition cruise and wet landings were only in ankle deep water. My camera bag was never in danger of getting wet. Can't speak to other cruise ships and their wet landings.
