I'm about ready to retire my Canon SX 160 16x zoom camera, but I'm having a hard time deciding what camera (either Nikon or Canon) I should be looking for. I'm on S.S. and don't get a very big check every month, so I was just wondering what I could afford. What would give me the most bang for the buck. Thanks in advance.
David,,,... Oh yea, should I even conceder a used camera?

I only ever buy used, cameras or cars. Not on a fixed income but believe that is the smart thing to do, if you are buying from a reputable seller. Even so, if the camera breaks (which has never happened to me yet) when you are paying less than 1/4 of the price of something new, you still come out ahead. And you would be hard pressed to tell a good shot from a
10 year old P&S and a modern technical marvel.

Why are you retiring your Canon? Is it for sale?

My understanding is that the 40D will out resolve it's successor, the 50D, particularly at higher ISO, but most would not notice. That being said, I have a 40D, find it's handling superior to the 20 & 30D, but can think of no reason to move on from here. After all, it only has 37,000 clicks on a 100,000 click shutter. :)

The problem is the rooms very in size and if I get far enough back than everyone looks to small. So I was hoping for something that would get me close enough but still be wide enough to get the whole group. Size wise we are looking at about 10 people wide and four rows deeps

Um... Isn't this just a matter of cropping the photo? Maybe into a 15X9 or 15X10 aspect ratio? If the camera has sufficient resolution that should not be a problem.

And what happened to the missing airliner which was followed on radar until its descent into the Pentagon? And its passengers? And all the radar records? Do the proponents of these crackpot theories believe that all those passengers didn't exist; that the flight didn't exist; that the radar records (which are always retained in the event of an incident) didn't exist; that the many controllers with knowledge of the radar track didn't exist or were all quietly murdered?

And to think, they could have saved a boat load of money by going to the San Diego zoo and taking the same image with an iPhone. I've got 10 of those shots on my camera right now.

Just thinking that. What makes this such a great shot anyway? This may as well have been an ad for an airline.

For this feature you have to have a lens that allows full time manual focus capability. It is not possible with most lenses and you can damage a lens that does not have that capability if you try to manual focus it when it is switched to AF mode. Don't do it!!!

Excellent point. I once ruined AF on a Canon kit lens that way.

I use BBF as an AF confirm technique while using MF on long lenses. Eliminates AF hunting. While holding down the button and turning the lens focus ring you will get an AF confirm light in the viewfinder.

I do like the idea of all of the “programmed” functions of the new flash units that are specifically designed to work with these cameras, just that the idea of shelling out $300-500 on a new flash when the ol’ trusty Sunpak would work… not sure. Yes, it’s a “thyristor” type, and that’s exactly how I used it back in the day. Just set the thing to “f8” or whatever and shot away.

You can find variously labelled dedicated TTL flashes on eBay for as low as $35. I bought a Vivitar with adjustable head, IR auto focus and a guide number of 35 for around $50. Works great on my E-3.

I still use the big old thyistor zoom units as optical slave flashes. Those optical triggers are only pennies a piece and work 100% of the time.

I like to use an off camera flash, high speed sync. You can keep the ISO setting low while using high shutter speeds.

This conversation should have been moved to general chit chat long ago. It has nothing to do with photography.

I can understand your concern, but during 25 yrs as a cross country trucker there are few places in the country I haven't been to and often spent the night asleep in my truck at. From the Brooklyn piers to East Los Angeles. Was nervous more then once but never really felt the need for a gun so I don't plan to change that. I always found that the proper use of what you have between your ears was the best defense.

I assume you are using an adapter. One of my adapters has the so-called Dandelion chip, originally of Russian origin. I bought it from China, fairly cheap. It can be programmed to a dedicated manual lens to give you auto-confirm in the viewfinder (and the "beep" if so desired). Took some trial and error to adjust for front/back focusing but now it works well enough on my old Olympus 50 1.8, maybe 70% keepers. I only use this on my E-3 as I still need a big, bright viewfinder.

I sold my 75-300 (non IS) after just a few months. Could not get sharp shots a the long end, at least not over 200mm. Replaced it with a 55-250 IS and find it to be much sharper and much faster focusing.

Even if their IQ were equal, the handling is incomparable. I graduated from a Canon S5 superzoom to Olympus DSLR some time ago but recently purchased a used SX40,for the size and the reach. Sold it one week later. Though arguably much improved over the S5 (the pics looked great) I couldn't hang with its lack of shooting speed, the zoom and the viewfinder.

I bought an X10 to use when I don't want to carry my DSLR. It takes such nice pictures and handles so well that I find myself using it more often than not. It's the only camera I will be taking on a work trip to Scotland next week.

With the hybrid viewfinder and better auto focus the X20 should be an even nicer camera.
