I'm about ready to retire my Canon SX 160 16x zoom camera, but I'm having a hard time deciding what camera (either Nikon or Canon) I should be looking for. I'm on S.S. and don't get a very big check every month, so I was just wondering what I could afford. What would give me the most bang for the buck. Thanks in advance.
David,,,... Oh yea, should I even conceder a used camera?

I have never used one, but I have read many good things about the Canon SX50. I think it is about $400 new.
A used or refurbished camera can be a good move on your part but only if you buy from a reputable dealer such as B&H or Adorama IMO. Taking a chance on a lesser known dealer or individual is not something I would think you would want to do on your fixed income. There are a number of reputable dealers so I suggest you get some feedback from Hog members as to who they are.

LFingar is right; click on the link to multiple discussion threads on the SX50. http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/search.jsp?q=sx50&u=&s=0

The current versions (SX170 & SX280) are not bad options, but the SX50 would give a LOT more camera and is just one step down from the SLR category.

I only ever buy used, cameras or cars. Not on a fixed income but believe that is the smart thing to do, if you are buying from a reputable seller. Even so, if the camera breaks (which has never happened to me yet) when you are paying less than 1/4 of the price of something new, you still come out ahead. And you would be hard pressed to tell a good shot from a
10 year old P&S and a modern technical marvel.

Why are you retiring your Canon? Is it for sale?

Like you I deal with a limited income. I bought a Fuji Finepix S1500 five years ago and it will have to soldier on for awhile more. It seems that Fuji has a slew of these bridge cameras and Amazon has them for about $140 up.
I particularly like my camera's video capability. I used it to make several videos flying my little homebuilt aircraft and the results were just fine for the project I was working on.
Following up on comments from the Hog, I've been able to learn a lot by getting out of full auto and exploring aperture and shutter control modes.
One other feature I like is the use of AA batteries. You have the option of buying rechargeables or just throwing in a set of alkalines if to keep going during a long day at an airshow.

My SX160 is still like new. It's not for sale as I will probably donate it to a family member. I just wanted to get something with a few more bells and wisthels (spelling). Thanks all for all your time...seeya David

Canon SX50 or Panasonic FZ200 are top sellers and inexpensive with very long zoom lenses that are crisp. Both are less than $500.

Consider this one more vote for the Canon SX50. I have a 7D and bought this as a "go anywhere" camera for when I did not want to drag all the SLR gear around. This little gem is amazing and it can be had for less than $400. I paid $349 and have seen it for less - look around.

I recently have bought the Panasonic FZ72 which is a bridge camera which goes from 20 mm to 1200 mm focal length (i.e. 60 x optical magnifications). It gives excellent results up to 30 x magnifications, but after that, quality drops off. I have been told that the Canon SX50 has similar problems. However, it does permit you to get photos which you otherwise would not get. My main criticism of the FZ72 is that it does not have a flip out viewing screen. Therefore for flowers and butterflies etc. on the ground I have to carry my old FZ100.

Whatever you choose - good luck & good shooting!
