Depends on the situation.
If I used the highest normal sync setting for my photos, I would lose the background. This was shot with the camera in manual, ttl on the flash-bounced. 1/40 sec f/4.5 ISO 1000.
Had I used 1/250th, the people would look like they were shot in a cave.

is that whats known as "dragging the shutter" ? if i understand correctly your background is well lit by the abient light and the subjects have been lit with the flash.

can someone explain how i use manual mode with on camera flash. surely the camera cannot take account of the flash as it hasnt happened yet and in manual mode you would set your shutter and aperture to get the right exposure without the flash albeit that the shutter might be a little slower than you would like, how then do you factor in the flash. hope i have made myself clear.
thanks

I use the YN 560ii (manual flash) and the YN-565ex (nearly a Canon 580exii without high speed sync or a commander mode). I also have the Canon 580exii. The Yongnuos are built well, but possibly not as well as the Canon, but then they are considerably less costly. I can use use the YN-565ex and Canon 580ex nearly interchangeably except that I try not to shoot the YNs at full power for more than a few shots. My Canon cameras can't tell the difference between the 580ex and the 565ex until I try to do one of the things that that the 565ex cannot do, and then the camera menu selection for that function is not selectable. I have been quite please with the YNs and will purchase another YN (possibly the YN-568ex) again. I have been using Yongnuo gear for several years without any problems.

jeff,
thanks for the reply, i take it the 565ex and the 580ex are ttl units

They are two completely different lenses. The B003 is the model number of the older model which is discontinued. The PZD (model number B008) is the newer and current version. It is a noticeably smaller and lighter lens with a filter size of 62mm. The older non PZD version is larger, heavier and has a 72mm filter size. The newer version has significantly better optics and has a PZD focus motor which is very quiet in use. What is he charging for the old version? The new PZD version can be bought brand new from B&H for $449 including the Tamron warranty.

I've attached links for both lenses on the Tamron website

B003 Discontinued Non PZD version:

Tamron B003 18-270 mm f/3.5-6.3 Di-II Aspherical AF IF VC Lens for Canon

Tamron 18 - 270 mm F3.5-6.3 Di-II AF IF VC PZD Lens -1- Canon

can anyone tell me what the difference is in the to lens descriptions please, the only difference i can see is the "pzd" bit but not sure if the seller on the other one has just forgotten to put it in.
thanks

Many will tell you Sigma. I don't agree with that. Do you need a zoom?? I love my Canon 400mm f/5.6.

pigpen,
thanks for the reply. do you mean you dont think sigma is as good? i have a 70-300 f/4-5.6 which i really like using and i get some great shots with it just looking to improve my equipment and wondering if there is anything other than canon, which would come highly recommended.

Bill, if that is less than a $1000, it's a bargain, even for an old lens.
I would not get a substitute. That lens in 5 years will still sell for that. Excellent lens. LIGHT and COMPACT.
