I use the YN 560ii (manual flash) and the YN-565ex (nearly a Canon 580exii without high speed sync or a commander mode). I also have the Canon 580exii. The Yongnuos are built well, but possibly not as well as the Canon, but then they are considerably less costly. I can use use the YN-565ex and Canon 580ex nearly interchangeably except that I try not to shoot the YNs at full power for more than a few shots. My Canon cameras can't tell the difference between the 580ex and the 565ex until I try to do one of the things that that the 565ex cannot do, and then the camera menu selection for that function is not selectable. I have been quite please with the YNs and will purchase another YN (possibly the YN-568ex) again. I have been using Yongnuo gear for several years without any problems.

Check this site out first. Here is a newer flash that seems pretty good. http://steelevisions.com/blog/phottix-mitros/.

Bill - if it's TTL you're wanting then, in addition to the Mitros and Mitros + you might like to look at the Nissin di700 and the Nissin di866 Mark ii ......

Both the YN-565 and newer YN-568 are eTTL based flashes. They work very well with the YN-622C units.

The new YN-568 is the ticket. I have that and the YN-565. They both can be used ETTL. The difference is that the 565 does not do HSS. The 568 does, which makes it very comparable to the Canon 580EX for a fraction of the price. I also love the YN-622C flash trigger as mentioned by Jeff.

As I said, The YN-568 is comparable to the 580EX by Canon. The 580EX is a better flash than the 550, so I think the YN-568 would be a better buy than 550, especially when you consider the difference in price. I bought the YN-568 for $168.00, and I couldn't be happier with it.

I'm no expert here, but this is my understanding. You can limit ambient light by using fast shutter speeds. If you don't have a HSS flash unit, your camera will only allow you to use a shutter speed of 1/200 or 1/250, depending on the camera. With HSS, my camera will allow me to use a 1/4000 sync speed. With some cameras you can go to 1/8000. By doing so, you pretty much shut out all the available light in a room or even outdoors, and your photo is lit completely by the flash. Mixed light sources can play havoc with WB. This eliminates that problem, while allowing you to make some interesting effects, such as capturing a subject in a well area, but only seeing what the flash throws light on. Everything else is in darkness.
I hope this helps. Perhaps others more experienced can give you more info on that.
