Petroleum jelly will give a nice blur, but the character of the blur is completely different.
I bought a 16mm Zenit on a whim. I like it so much that I added a CPU chip. I use it way more often than I expected to.
Could the steps the OP is using be too wide?
I hope this makes sense. Does the camera focus "front to back" or "back to front"? If it prefers one starting position it might be trying to stack 'backwards'.

I really like mine. If you prefer the knobs and dials to drop down menus it is really worth it.

I only print for my own personal use, and I use their paper exclusively. I really like it.
I can only compare it to the paper from mass merchandisers like Office Depot or Kodak or other similar products.
I'm curious what others say.
