Which Lens Baby do you use? These certainly give me a kick in the pants to use mine (old 2.0) again!!

Could you get the same effect by applying petroleum jelly to a filter in the pattern of blur you wanted?

Yes, but you can also get the effect by applying a vignetted blur in post. That way you can retain the original sharp version too.
