It works for 2 and 3 very nicely. The others are ok, too, but not as good to me.

Could you get the same effect by applying petroleum jelly to a filter in the pattern of blur you wanted?

Yes, but you can also get the effect by applying a vignetted blur in post. That way you can retain the original sharp version too.
