I have a wedding to photograph in July in Pennsylvania. What suggestions do you have for packing DSLR's, lenses, tripod, poles, extra flash heads, SD cards? I don't want anything broken, stolen, mislaid, etc. I am also worried about the cards on the return trip; should I download the images in a safe place before leaving? Thanks in advance for your advice.
For Carry On:
1. Airport ThinkTank combo Backpack~roller bag (there are four sizes, depending on the amount of your equipment - some will also carry a notebook computer which can be removed for going through security. Check with airline for carry-on size)
2. Wear a Photographer's vest for small equipment; i.e., spare SD cards, cables, filters, SD card reader and cable, boarding passes, driver's license, passport, one external hard drive with USB cable, etc.
3. Oversize purse with one camera body and short prime lens, tripod head, and one P&S camera, two sets of underwear, jacket or sweater and jewelry.
3. Flat shoes like loafers (no shoe laces for easing thru security)
For Checked Luggage Bag (one with wheels)
1. No cameras or camera gear or jewelry except an inexpensive tripod.
2. Inside checked bag place a large typed list with your name, itinerary, destination address and telephone. Not your home address but include both round-trip airline data. On your return trip include your home address.
3. Colorful luggage strap to wrap around outside of bag to easily see it at baggage pickup and avoid someone with a similar looking bag 'accidentally' picking up yours. (lol)
Options:
Ship camera gear, insured, a few days in advance. Use FedX, UPS, or USPS. Do not ship via Greyhound or Amtrak.
If you're going to ship your camera gear, go to the shipper with several typed detailed list of camera gear and their model number.
- Have camera gear's bag, etc., opened so shipper can verify contents and give you a receipt.
- You can ship gear in the ThinkTank or other camera bag. The shipper will boxed bag and seal it in your presences.
- Don't be in a hurry, wait for shipper to box and seal and give you a receipt.
- A list of shipped gear should be placed with the camera gear, another in the shipping box, another with shipping label and two for you.
- Do not have gear shipped to your destination address
- Pickup gear at the shipper's location.
- Open box in shipper's office to verify all gear is there and the condition of gear (broken, not broken, etc.)
Although I tend to be a detailed person I probably missed something but someone else may have covered it.
- Being detailed I find takes a lot of distress worry off.
- Treat your gear like your first born (lol).
Then enjoy your trip and have fun while photographing.
