When you're out in "the field," and you need to take notes to identify what you are shooting (location in a city, name of the flower, relevance of an inscription, etc.) what seems to be the preference: small notebook and pencil, handheld digital recorder, record function on the camera to attach a comment to a particular image?

Thanx!!

I have a wedding to photograph in July in Pennsylvania. What suggestions do you have for packing DSLR's, lenses, tripod, poles, extra flash heads, SD cards? I don't want anything broken, stolen, mislaid, etc. I am also worried about the cards on the return trip; should I download the images in a safe place before leaving? Thanks in advance for your advice.

For Carry On:
1. Airport ThinkTank combo Backpack~roller bag (there are four sizes, depending on the amount of your equipment - some will also carry a notebook computer which can be removed for going through security. Check with airline for carry-on size)
2. Wear a Photographer's vest for small equipment; i.e., spare SD cards, cables, filters, SD card reader and cable, boarding passes, driver's license, passport, one external hard drive with USB cable, etc.
3. Oversize purse with one camera body and short prime lens, tripod head, and one P&S camera, two sets of underwear, jacket or sweater and jewelry.
3. Flat shoes like loafers (no shoe laces for easing thru security)

For Checked Luggage Bag (one with wheels)
1. No cameras or camera gear or jewelry except an inexpensive tripod.
2. Inside checked bag place a large typed list with your name, itinerary, destination address and telephone. Not your home address but include both round-trip airline data. On your return trip include your home address.
3. Colorful luggage strap to wrap around outside of bag to easily see it at baggage pickup and avoid someone with a similar looking bag 'accidentally' picking up yours. (lol)

Options:
Ship camera gear, insured, a few days in advance. Use FedX, UPS, or USPS. Do not ship via Greyhound or Amtrak.
If you're going to ship your camera gear, go to the shipper with several typed detailed list of camera gear and their model number.
- Have camera gear's bag, etc., opened so shipper can verify contents and give you a receipt.
- You can ship gear in the ThinkTank or other camera bag. The shipper will boxed bag and seal it in your presences.
- Don't be in a hurry, wait for shipper to box and seal and give you a receipt.
- A list of shipped gear should be placed with the camera gear, another in the shipping box, another with shipping label and two for you.
- Do not have gear shipped to your destination address
- Pickup gear at the shipper's location.
- Open box in shipper's office to verify all gear is there and the condition of gear (broken, not broken, etc.)

Although I tend to be a detailed person I probably missed something but someone else may have covered it.
- Being detailed I find takes a lot of distress worry off.
- Treat your gear like your first born (lol).

Then enjoy your trip and have fun while photographing.

No.
Just as I suspected. Thanks!
I have an old SLR Nikkor 55mm f/1.2 lens in excellent condition which I hesitate to have machine modified for mounting on my DSLR Nikons, especially since I want to keep the ability to use my film SLR.
I wish an adapter was made for those pre-1970 manufactured prime Nikkor lens. I have several of them.
- Having to manually focus would be okay.
- Losing one or two f stops would not be a concern as they have built-in aperture settings.
I'll look at the Sigma 50/1.4.

It takes excellent pictures, does email, googles any subject, gives the weather, provides directions and maps, GPS, text messages and lets me make calls.
Which camera, manufacturer, type and model #?

How many MP's?
Does it shoot in RAW?
What's its f stops (max ~ min)?
What's its lens X (Optical Image: range, mm)?

Thanks to our president, more crap to follow, there goes our freedom.
It's ignorant people like you who spouse mis-information.

You obviously don't know how our government works. The President has little to nothing to do with the further erosion of our freedoms.

Congress makes the laws, some which further erodes our freedoms.

It is the duty of the President to enforce the laws if said laws don't violate the Constitution as determined by the Supreme Court.

Your beef is with Congress not with the President. That is why we need to impose term limits on all politicians, especially Congress.

Now take your foot out of your mouth and your brains out of your ass and shut up.

Would having two cops investigate such a complaint make them unavailable for something serious?
That situation was very serious in this day of children abductions and pedophiles.

I'm glad the police men did their job and I am more glad in the professional and polite way the grandfather handled himself.

So, the dealer puts the lens in a generic white box, with the accessories and warranty card, and sells it at a reduced price. My experience buying this white box was a good one. I hope this helps you :-)
To bad camera sellers/dealers are prevented by Nikon from doing this. There's a Nikon body I want but it only comes with a kit lens I already own.

Nice bag. Now I want one which will carry three DSLR bodies plus most for what you carry, have backpack straps and roller wheels, and still meet airline carry on specs.

Thanks Captain C for mentioning Camranger. I didn't know about Camranger. So I Goggled it. Saw it's video.

Now it is on my list of photographic things to buy and instead of buying another laptop, am now shopping for a tablet/net-book for field use with camera and Camranger.

Having several cameras with multi attachments, filters etc. it is hard to keep track of everything and get fast access to what I am looking for. In fact I have bought duplicates of several items. Any suggestions on how, or in what, to store such items ... This does not include bodies or lenses, just doohickeys.
Thanks. Ed
Use a large fishing tackle box with or without labeling compartments. Check them out at any big box hardware or sporting goods store.
