Nikon--Two Card Slots

When I upgraded to my D7000 I was intrigued about the possibilities afforded by two memory card slots. I had intended to capture NEF images in slot 1 and JPEG Fine images in the slot 2. My intention was to download NEF and JPEG cards in separate files on my computer. Given that many (maybe most) of my shots are not keepers I would delete many NEF images and just keep those I wanted to work on in LightRoom (just starting that too). I would keep more, but not all, of the JPEG images to distribute to unsuspecting friends and relatives and just enjoy as they were. When I googled setup instructions confusion reigned about the use and purpose of the two card slots. Several sites that I saw discouraged the use of the second slot for anything but overflow. Other people didn't seem to have any idea what they were talking about. (My wife frequently says that about me.) My question to friends here: is my thinking off? Do I misunderstand the purpose of saving in the two different formats? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

You have a choice of what the second slot will record. I use mine for overflow. I hate running out of space and my extra cards are a way off in the car. If I were shooting something like a wedding or spent thousands of $$ going to a once in a lifetime location I would assign it as a backup. You can also shoot Raw + Jpeg on the same card but I find this time consuming when uploading to my computer. I want them in separate folders. In the end the choice is yours.

Both of my cameras are set up for NEF to the first card and JPEG Fine to the second card. This has great for me for several years.

I'm with you,Nervous2. I'm going on a big trip and we download every night. I'm pairing up a 16gb for RAW with an 8GB for jPEG fine. Someday I may get into pp, so I'll have the separate files. I have 3 pairs ready to go for our 2 cameras.

Personally I VERY seldom see the use of shooting both raw and a jpg. If what I am shooting is important and will need processing or in a challenging environment I use raw. If it is sports stuff or family stuff that will not need much, if any, processing, I use jpg.

For that important stuff - certainly for client or charity images - I use the second slot as backup. What a great feeling to know that in the unusual event of a corrupted card, that there is a second card holding those images.

In the rare event I do shoot both, I STILL use the second slot as backup, but the camera shoots a raw+jpg and both go on the same card. I do that when using the Camranger as the jpg file transfers to the iPad much faster and the raw stays on just the camera card.

Since the nef file includes an embedded jpeg, you could shoot just raw, and send your unsuspecting friends and relatives the embedded jpeg file. You can use Instant JPEG From Raw to extract it, a hundred nef files will be processed in about 10 seconds, faster than downloading from the card.

With two cards in My D7100 and D800 I tend to shoot RAW with the second card as overflow. I discovered that I never download Jpegs. I format both cards after downloading to my computer.I like the two card system because it gives me options to please myself.

I use 2nd slot for backup as well. The Camranger is the best for taking real estate images.

I think I'll start using backup instead of overflow. I always shoot with jpeg large, Normal. With 2 32GB memory cards, I get about 2700 shots to a card. I don't need the overflow. At that capacity, the backup would be more of an insurance.

Good discussion.
