The crazy thing is...I'm still quite happy with my EM1ii. Rarely do I bump up against image quality issues (that aren't caused by user error).

I wish Oly had stayed in the dslr mkt, and had engineered a ff model. I owned each of the 4/3 dslrs, and found this E-5, my second one, to be absolutely my overall fav, including my big Canons. It is not loaded up with a ton of functions you hardly ever use, menu sys straight forward, produces very good images, and feels good in my hands. Hard to knock one that does all that for its owner.

Btw, plan to add the Oly 9-18 next. I think KEH has one.

As much as I loved my e5 with the 7-14 f4, 12-60 and 50-200 swd, I’ll gladly take my m4/3 em1ii 7-14 f2.8, 12-40 f2.8, 75mm f1.8, and 150 f2 (with mmf3 ec14 and ec20 teleconverters) any day of the week.

You all love the waste money ..all you need is to attach your strap to the single strap lug opposite to the grip and thats it . I use a 30cent fishing swivel ( rated 150 lb) in the triangular ring and another ring on the other end. Than a clasp onto the strap ....Used this for years ..D850 /grip/ flash and 28-300 lens no problem. KISS and EPLS

To each their own. I'll spend my money where I see fit. Camera plate vs a swivel...not even close to being the same item.

For me I need an arca-swiss mount, but I also don't just want a small mount. I want something that goes across the entire bottom of the camera. Also, the added plate makes it more stable when I set it on a flat surface. It also protects the entire bottom of the camera from scratches. It has more than one mounting point. The little arca-swiss groove also gives my pinky finger a nice place to rest. It also has an an optional L-bracket connection.

What can the swivel do? Swivel.

Thank you Cdouthitt for all your suggestions! I would have to work up to having all those lenses. I was going to start with the 12-100 but need to see how heavy/large it is. I just like having one lens as a walk-around lens that also does macro - although I know the M4/3 doesn't produce bokeh very well - at least so far!

I am definitely not a professional and I definitely do not believe that having the most expensive camera will make me a better photographer, BUT I do believe that having a camera that "corrects" for my issues (primarily shaking hands) will have my photos come out better. Also, the ability to see how changing the aperture/shutter speed will affect the image right in the viewfinder is amazing - although I read that the highlights might appear to be "blown out" erroneously...time will tell.

I will start with one lens, keep some of my Canon gear and see how it all plays out over time! This is going to be fun!
Thank you Cdouthitt for all your suggestions! I wo... (show quote)

If you shoot raw, you’ll find the highlight recovery to be better than you might think that m4/3 is capable of. That was one of big improvements over the original em1 to the em1ii that I noticed. I have to imagine that it’s even better with em1iii. As to bokeh, the f1.2 lenses are great, but also pricy. The 75 f1.8 is ultra sharp (one of the sharpest in the family) and has great bokeh. I know the focal length is covered in the 12-100 range, but there’s just something about the 75 that always makes me gravitate towards it when I need that certain shot. For around $400 used it’s one of the best lenses out there.

I must say I'm also impressed at how many Olympus M4/3 users are on this forum. Don't see a lot of gab from them, and I can only guess most are very satisfied with this "sleeper" brand.., I rest my case.

I was a little louder (and obnoxious) a few years ago, for those around here before 2019 may remember. Nearly banned a few times too

I’ve used the keystone correction a few times, but honestly you can do the same thing in post as well through photoshop/lr.

As to the camera...get the new em1iii and call it good. If I were doing it all over again today, I’d buy the following lenses:
8-16 (I love my 7-14, but I like the compactness of the 8-16)
12-40 (the 12-100 is also an option here, but I value compactness...which is why I own a 12-32)
60 macro
75
300 with 1.4
I do wish they would come out with a 150 f2 equivalent in a m4/3 Mount. I love the little tuna, but it is a bit oversized.

I also recommend a RRS camera plate along with a peak design leash. The additional mounting points for a camera strap really help, especially when using my larger lenses. I’m also probably one of the rare ones here who still uses a tripod at times with Olympus, and the camera plate has a arca-swiss mount that is full length.

$10k vs $5k
Easily half the weight and size
True, IQ won’t be as good as FF, but if it’s too big to shoot, then give me the smaller setup every time.

Here are some examples from the em1ii and what it's capable of (from this self-taught hack):

Em1mkiii was announced yesterday. Go for that model. You won’t miss your canon after a solid week of shooting with the Olympus. It’s a solid system, but does require some setting up (tons of customizable buttons).

What would induce anyone to buy this camera ? I have a mk1 and may or may not buy a mk2 down the line if price is right but I question whether the improvements of the mk3 justify the cost. The M43 community do not seem to be overwhelmed....

Big difference between the em1 and em1ii (I used to own the EM1). The EM1iii vastly improves performance over your em1. I loved the original em1, but the C-af was dismal on it. The IQ of the newer sensors is also much better. But if those aren't issues for you and if you haven't worn out a camera that was released 7 years ago, then by all means stick with what you have.
