It figures, I recently bought a refurbished OM-D E-M5 Mark II, a 25mm F1.8 lens and a 60mm F2.8 macro lens....Hope the new owners (JIP) maintain the system...

It happens. My EM1M2 is not going to stop working because of this transaction. My lenses will not go soft and there are plenty of lens for the system already. If JIP doesn't continue to innovate, so be it I have a camera system that will out last me. Since JIP will be buying the complete operation and not just the name all of the same technology and people will continue forward under new ownership.

According to Olympus they have experienced losses for the past three years so the company has not been financially stable. Actually the transfer to JIP should take place by December of this year.
Olympus has stated that all of their activities in the camera and optical development will continue as it has been till now. Apparently and from what I know Olympus will have a better economic backing joining JIP. Olympus shares in the stock market continues to do well.

I am not familiar with JIP so I will keep on watching the news. I am confident that a stronger company will result from this transaction since nothing regarding the manufacture of cameras and lenses, plus the other Olympus products will change. The company has promised better and innovative products since they now will have the resources for more research and development.

We will have to wait till the transaction is completed. In my case I am glad for Olympus and I feel confident a stronger company will be the result of the transaction.

Probably a good thing...

The company has a rumored reputation for internal corruption and turmoil. Maybe they’ll get some better leadership, better marketing, and a clearer direction. Better camera menus and ergonomics would help, too.

That said, many of their lenses are absolutely fantastic, and the engineers are very innovative. This is a company that just needs some tuning.

I just wonder what direction the new owners will take. Will they keep the brand name and innovations, or will it go the path of Konica, then Minolta being swallowed up by Sony where the older Minolta AF lenses won't work natively on the newer Sony cameras but need an adapter...

Although I am guessing I am going to say that Olympus will improve with this transaction. Now they will have more money for research and development and I bet new, better and more innovative products will be the result.
In my humble opinion this is going to be good for Olympus. I share the same opinion of Bill Burkholder.

With >110 Micro 4/3 lenses available, I don’t see them changing mounts any time soon. Maybe they’ll join the ‘L Mount Alliance of Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma and release a full frame body, but that’s also a stretch.

So where is the problem in the Minolta Konica Sony line ? Most of my lenses for my current Sonys are decades old A-mount Minolta af lenses and everything works better than when they were new.

I am also hoping the “New Olympus” will share the Leica-Lumix mount, but base it on the H-format. That might oxygenate the embers !

Apparently it has not disappeared. There is a website (see below) for the Vaio with usb C, SD card slot and other plugs as well as 4K Ulta HD. If that is disappeared then all laptops have.

Luckily the 4/3rds has an industry standardization. Adapters will only be needed for non-micro 4/3rds lenses and other format lens adaptations. I think Burkphoto is right. The new owners are buying the whole camera business, not just the technology. The last two years' loses were caused by their not controling their costs and some corruption. This year I think they would have done better except for the pandemic. The 4/3rds market is somewhat stable compared to the other formats. Smartphones are going to continue to hit the sales of single use cameras. I would have preferred Olympus hang on to the camera imaging business, but let us see what and how the new company does. With some new sensors and some decent marketing, the Olympus camera name may continue on and make Olympus actually wish they had kept it.

Sorry, Cdouthitt, it will probably not stop working any time soon. It may become more outdated with each passing year though. You will not be forced to go to bigger, heavier, more costly full frame Canon or Nikon anytime soon. And there will still be Panasonic waiting there in the wings with their newest 4/3rds for you with no lenses lost.

Yeah, believe it or not, Tony Northrup was waxing romantic about a Lumix GH6 in one of his latest videos. Of course, he was the guy who predicted the death of Micro 4/3. Since he did, quite a few lenses and several new bodies have been introduced, by Panasonic and Olympus.
