The organization is named "ISO" from the Latin word "Isos" ("equal" ) and is pronounced "eye-so".

That's how it was explained to me when I went through ISO accreditation auditor training.

I work for the AZ Highway Patrol, AKA AZ Department of Public Safety. I have been doing this for 20+ years and I do NOT know everything but I will be glad to help anybody that want the help. We in AZ have a unique situation. There is no tracking of the digital images. There are only 2 civilians in the Photo Lab. We cannot go all over the state all of the time. Most pictures are taken by the officers with P&S cameras, in jpg format, put on a CD and sent to us for storage. No, we don't have an archive system other than storing the CDs in the envelope that they came to us in. When an officer goes to court, they are usually asked, "Is this a true and accurate representation of what you saw?" I have only been to court about 4 times in 20+ years. (not good, just lucky!!!)

Hi Dick! Greetings from across the street. For everyone else reading this, Dick is being modest, he knows a ton about this topic and he is a true professional. We have slightly different guidelines working in the lab as opposed to field work. For example, Latent Prints converts their files to TIFF and stores them in a database that has strict tracking of any changes. Our footwear images can be enhanced (contrast, brightness, saturation, etc.) in Photoshop to pull out tread detail. After that, it can be saved as a JPEG and printed out. Photomicrographs are taken with specialized cameras on the microscope using various imaging software. Most of the time it's the printed image that goes to court.

I asked a simple question about a lens and all this BS is so stupid. Feel like I'm dealing with a bunch of kindergarten children who have to be told to play nice. What a bunch of bananas...... By the way I ordered the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC OS HSM from B&H and should have it by the 10th. Thanks for all that good info...... LOL!

I agree! All of you on a tangent needed to take it someplace else a long time ago. And good choice on the Sig, I know you'll enjoy it.

I shoot with a Nikon D7000 and have the Sigma 17-50...love it!!!

2nd ^^ I also have this combo and can recommend the Sigma 17-50.

I had the 17-70 2.8-4, which I also thought was very good. The only drawback was that it was a little soft at 70mm @ f/4. Stopping down to f/5.6 for sharpness might be too slow for the OP's hockey games. The new Contemporary version is supposed to be sharper, from what I've read.

Which is the better monitor for photographic editing

This isn't one of the options you asked about, but Shutterbug started recommending this Asus as an affordable option. I don't have first-hand experience with it, but it's on my list to look at when I need my next monitor.

I have a Nikon D3000. After seeing so many advisories to learn to use features other than Auto focus, I have made several attempts to learn more. However, after I have played around with the settings for awhile, I find that I can not get my camera to fire. I can keep pushing on the shutter button and nothing happens except that the "pre-light" will come on and that's all --the shutter doesn't function.
After I play around awhile the camera will eventually revert to normal operation, but I have no idea why.

You mention that you want to use other features besides auto focus... did you switch off auto focus on your lens? As others have mentioned, your camera is likely set to trigger the shutter only when you have focus locked. Personally, I think most of the kit lenses don't have enough fine adjustment to mess with manual focus. I'd leave it in auto focus for now, but experiment with learning different exposure modes other than auto.

Put them in the freezer, take them out just before shooting, while there's still a little condensation to cut the glare. I learned this from my grandfather some 30 years ago. He was a professional photographer, his clients said they were the best coin photos they'd seen.

Forgot to mention, I've been using an Acratech Ultimate for the last couple of years, very happy with it.

Hello fellow Hoggers,

...P.S. Ball head choice is next so input on a ball head that will support a Canon 70D w/100 to 400mm L or 70-200mm L glass would help also!

Thank you for your time,

Someone posted this link to a very comprehensive ball head comparison/review about a month ago, here it is again. I found it very informative.

I have both the Op/Tech and Black Rapid. The BR was first, which I still like. I tried the Op/Tech from MT's recommendation in previous discussions. I find the Op/Tech's slightly stretchy padding to be slightly more comfortable on the shoulder. The only thing I don't like about it is that the strap from the lug seems to end up in my face a lot while shooting, depending how I'm holding it and my body position. I never noticed that with the tripod mounted BR strap. Never had any issues with the tripod mount integrity, for what it's worth.

Nikon says they designed their strap in conjunction with RRS. I called RRS and asked them if the strap should be directly attached to the tripod socket. They said no.

Maybe it has something to do with RRS wanting to sell you a $70 adapter? :)

I am planning two trips. I will be driving to Prescott, AZ in April, and Honeyman Lake, on OR. Can someone recommend locations for natural history subjects within a couple of hours of Prescott, AZ. I am interested in habitats, scenic, and of course, wildlife.

The other trip to Honeyman Lake in Oregon will be in July. I am interested in any noteworthy waterfalls withing a couple of hours of Honeyman State Park. If you know of locations from either of these spots, I would appreciate any advice. Just a name of a spot will help as I can Google it and gather more info. before I leave.

I only want suggestions from people who have been to the places they are suggesting though. The waterfalls I am interested in do not have to be huge. I am interested in the vegetation, details in the ferns, bracken, mosses, rocks, etc.

Most of the waterfalls I would recommend in AZ involve hiking. Is that part of your agenda, or do you want easy access from your vehicle? Sedona, as others have mentioned, is rich with opportunities. If you're there, drive up Oak Creek canyon to the West Fork. Easy access and well worth it.

Even right in Prescott you can have fun exploring Granite Dells with the interesting boulder formations.

If you want a more adventurous day trip, hike to Fossil Creek, near Payson. It's a commitment, though, between the drive and the hike.

If you head out west of Prescott, it's a great drive through Skull Valley and Yarnell or Bagdad. Connect to hwy 93, go north a while and you'll be in the Joshua Tree forest.

It seems like everyone has had a better experience with metal prints than mine. I just got a 16x20" print last week (promotional deal from "Picture it on Canvas"), and I was very disappointed. My standard test print (same size) from Costco was much more vibrant and had better detail. I wonder if something went wrong?

P.S. I have no idea how the winking guy got in my post. Oops!

Maybe you should check Dave, they usually are beautiful but I don't know anything about picture it on canvas but I would let them know I wasn't happy with my photo. They should refund your money or try again until you are pleased!

I was thinking about that, actually. I do want to give them feedback. I was also disappointed that they limit the file size quite a bit. I had to down-size my jpeg in order for the website to accept it. I shot the photo with my D7000 - it was 16mp to start, not exactly huge relative to other cameras these days.
