I hear this term pronounced both ways on commercial and You Tube videos; as individual letters (I S O) and also as if it were a word (eyeso). Is there a correct or preferred pronunciation?

ISO is a system of rating the light sensitivity of film (and now digital sensors) that was established by the International Organization for Standardization. So technically the term ISO is an acronym. I pronounce it I-S-O.
Huh, interesting.
I don't think I ever heard anybody try to make it a word before and pronounce it eyeso.
But then again I don't remember anyone ever calling ASA assa either.
Can anyone explain how/why ISO differs from ASA? Is a digital/film thing, or just a different standard that gained greater, and finally universal acceptance?

ASA is the American Standards Association's measure of light sensitivity. Like you said, it's just a different form of the same thing.

Lotus, Welcome to the Hog.
The scale iteself, does not differ, only the international body that controls the std.
Lotus, I use I.S.O., but only cause that's how I learned it.
One of my professors, whom is one of the highest level Photogs I've ever come across, uses the word, as do a few others of his ilk. So what's,"high level"? There is not one photographer on here, whom at some point, has not seen his work. So I take that as pretty authoritve.
So neither way would be considered wrong by me. ;-)

In between ISO and ASA was DIN The numbers, 25,32,100 etc-etc meant the same thing but the acronyms referred to different measuring orginizations.

I remember DIN!!! That was waaay back! I think DIN may have even come before either ASA or ISO...
Setting a digital camera at ISO 400, for example, would give the sensor the same light sensivity or light capturing capacity as loading ASA 400 film in a film camera. The numbers have the same value. ;)

Victor, DIN is just another standard that's used, I believe it's German, but i see it used mostly in Europeon products. It's still used in some industries, whose products reach our shores. ;-)

What does that have to do with the OP?

OP's tend to get expanded upon by the multiple entities who find it interesting, although not all for the same reasons... It's the nature of the beast.

ASA only goes to 12500 which equals ISO 12500. Actually ISO's above 10000 (including 12500 - 400000) are unofficial:

I think you will get better pictures if you use I-S-O ,
or A-S-A.
