The Sigma 150-600 sport is sharper because it is mounted on tripod and I use a remote shutter release. Totally different shooting technique. I can't imagine shooting it handheld at my age.

Thanks! I'll go to a dealer and try it out. I do want to actually handle it and feel how comfortable it is to hold and use.

One thing I really liked about the lens is the ability to zoom by pushing/pulling the lens hood when attached.

I like these shots! Must have been an amazing experience. I can only imagine. How do you rate the Sigma as far IQ, color rendition, VC, autofocus, ? I am strongly considering this lens or the Nikon 70-300 fx vr.

I have the Sigma 150-600mm and it is a fast focusing sharp lens. But I needed something that is compact, light and I can shoot handheld. When Sigma announced the 100-400mm, I hoped it would perform almost as well. It certainly was light enough, fast focus and after a few weeks of practice I decided I would use it as my main lens for the safari. I used it right out of the box (no customization via the usb dock) and it did not disappoint. You can judge by my sample photos which did not go thru any PP.

See my post Africa safari photos in Photo Gallery. I used this lens handheld for all my wildlife shots.

Search my post Africa Safari photos in Photo Gallery. I returned 2 weeks ago from S. Africa safari (So. Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe). Had 2 cameras - Nikon D800e with new Sigma 100-400mm lens for wildlife and Sony a6500 with 18-105mm for wide shots. I was quite satisfied with results from the Sigma.

Lens was just released in early June. It was light enough for my arthritic hands and compact enough to fit in my backpack for the game drives.

Agreed. I posted pics as is just to give idea of what the Sigma was capable of.

The animals are not afraid of the trucks because they think the trucks are other animals. But when you go for a walk you hardly see any animals because they all hideaway.

Guide said that animals see trucks as part of the landscape. Once you start calling attention to yourself, animals (esp. lions) will focus on you and may investigate (even see you as prey).

I just returned from 16 day southern Africa safari trip (S.Africa, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe). I had my Nikon D800e with Sigma 100-400mm lens for my wildlife shots (all hand held) and a Sony A6500 with 18-105mm for wide shots. I was very satisfied with the Sigma.

Love your gimbal. I've been using the same one since 2006. I've taken 1000s of pics using it. Flawless, cheap, can probably hold 100bs without giving it a second thought.

I adapted it to use Arca Swiss plates by attaching an Arca-Swiss compatible clamp.

The bolt pattern perfectly fits the pattern in the Manfrotto plate, and you can use three screws to attach it.

I've thought of doing same. So just the clamp was enough to make it Arca-swiss compatible? I talked to the owner of that company and he makes 1 or 2 other styles just for this gimbal type. Mine is the older Manfrotto 3421. There is a newer version which his clamps have been designed around. He was not sure if they also fit my. His clamps slide into the existing Manfrotto mount.

My post yesterday was moved by admin to the photo gallery. Here are some photos with some thought to exposure control. Same animals they tend to hang out on my property. I believe mrjcall wanted me to try f8.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was so excited to try the lens that I forgot to make any exposure adjustments (sometimes I shoot in automatic mode when I don't care about sharpness so much). I shot hand held.
