The first one is really funny. My wife was a neo-natal nurse before retiring. She will get a kick out of that one.

The frost or crystals indicate freezer burn and that portion of the food is no good - sometimes it can be cut away and the rest used (depending on the food item) - we thaw questionable stuff and check it out - if it’s bad we give it to our feral cats.

So if you “check it out” & if it’s not good give ot the feral cats, have you ever gotten sick while checking it out?

I live in the country. When the local fire department was looking to recruit several years ago, I offered to volunteer as a fire cop directing traffic & helping with comms. withmy emergency communications training, since I have lung issues & could not actually fight fires. They said they were only interested in EMT-B or above who were willing to train as paramedics. Understandable, I suppose, but having a fire cop on scene could free up a full-blown firefighter or EMT. I am a member of a first responder group where my emergency communications skills help free up the EMT’s to do their job.

P. S.: I think a lot of this reluctance to use volunteers in paid fire/Ems organization is due to liability & lawsuit implications.

I'm in the Northeast and even the paid departments are having a difficult time recruiting. In my area, the neighboring paid/volunteer departments for years had have Mutual Aid agreements that are even more important today.
I have a Chronic Illness, so my firefighting days are over. Therefore I joined the Fire Police. Heck, at 65, my firefighting days would be over anyway.
Regarding photography, Its helped my cognitive issues improve by exercising my mind to think harder about my settings (and composition since I can no longer climb up/down hills) In one respect, it has made me a better photographer since I'm not able to get the compositions that I had become too comfortable with.
Photography, over time, has also helped improve the distance I can walk because it keeps me out walking almost everyday (in nature) instead of just sitting at home.
I went from walking a Quarter mile, up to 2+ miles before I can no longer stand. As a Fire cop, I can stand at a road closure for over 3 hours.
It's sad but the majority of young people today, don't want to Think or Work.
I'm glad I grew up when I did.

If you’ve never been to the Pearl Harbor Memorial in Hawaii, you should go. It’s almost an American duty to go. It’s a very sad, sobering, and “hair raising experience. By that I mean when we were there I could feel the hair on the back of my neck stand out.
You will definitely be moved.

Strange the effect things have on us. First time I saw the original traveling Viet Nam Wall I experienced a similar reaction. Eerie. It’s good that we don’t let milestones in history be forgotten, but, to be recognized and honored for those that were willing to give their all for our great country and those we defend.

I was so lucky to be born at a time when I was more or less safe from the scourge of polio. My wife had a card stating that she was a Polio Pioneer, one of the first to get the shot. I assume that I got the shot, too, but I have no recollection of it. I was watching a 1940s movie a couple of days ago, and a little boy had one of those metal braces on his leg, indicating that he had polio. I'm guessing that they added that for authenticity, but maybe that little actor did have polio.

Reading the article below, that was for a Field Trial. Can you imagine the uproar today if someone wanted to give a trial vaccine against polio? There's already a movement to end the requirement for the measles vaccine.

Sample card below. Notice that it was from the "Cheyenne Mountain School." That was long before the military installation.

I’m the same age as you, Jerry & remember well the polio scare when I was in elementary school. Had a classmate that missed a year of school due to polio; thank goodness he recovered fully from it.

Curmudgeon is right. Many online forums have members who are "not young." I watched a video that a YouTuber posted about a trip to a train show - lots of old men. I used to go to the motorcycle show in NYC, and there were lots of old men there, too, although the younger crowd was well represented.

Come to think of it, every group I've belonged to has consisted of "mature" members.

We could take a survey of the ages of our members. I'm 79.

79,turning 80 at end of month. Good gosh; how did that happen???

They would not tolerate the clad in stone attitudes here for more than maybe two minutes.

However...there are many young people intetested in photography and interested in doing it right. I am working with a number of them. But you are going to have to go to them and work on their terms. They are legitimately interested in photography, but they don't care much about the attitudes and rigidity of old people. They are not interested in our forums, and they are not interested in our clubs. And if treated the way members here treat each other, they'll be gone in a minute.

I’ve talked to a couple of pro photographers & didn’t hear them talk about pixels. Maybe I haven’t talked to enough of them. Will make it a point to talk about pixels next time I talk to one.
Oh; just wondering-how did professional photographers survive before there were a lot pixels? Hm.
