Frozen Food Lifespan - And...

I was looking through the freezer yesterday, and I came across some frozen chicken. I always write the date on the package when I freeze something. The chicken was only off my one month, so it's probably okay, right? This is December, and the date on the bag was January - just one month away. I can see that being a gag on a sitcom. Or maybe not.

This one is beyond pretty bad, but someone sent it to me.

Jack: "The actress from Legally Blonde stabbed her husband yesterday."

Tom: "Witherspoon?"

Jack: "No, with a knife."

LOL -
on the frozen food - we vacuum pack our stuff for the freezer - we’ve pulled salmon filets out after 7 years and it was just as fresh when it thawed as when we put it in… If there is no frost or crystals on the food - it’s probably good. The frost or crystals indicate freezer burn and that portion of the food is no good - sometimes it can be cut away and the rest used (depending on the food item) - we thaw questionable stuff and check it out - if it’s bad we give it to our feral cats.

We had two of those vacuum machines. They didn't last very long.

The cost of the meat you throw away will probably buy you two of the machines. They go on sale at Costco for $75. The vacuum bags contain an oxygen barrier so the fat in the meat does not go rancid; that generally what spoils meat in the freezer.

We had a friend who raised beef so we bought a half cow from him. There are two of us. Filled two chest freezers. We are still eating the beef 5 years later. It was vacuum packed by the butcher.

So if you “check it out” & if it’s not good give ot the feral cats, have you ever gotten sick while checking it out?

Nope - generally the smell test - sometimes the texture…

Unless the freezer got warm, I doubt there would be any more risk of a bacterial food poisoning then when it was put away. We have eaten turkeys frozen for many years without issue. Fatty seafood, soft shell crabs and salmon don't freeze well for long, over a years time, the crabs just became tasteless. The frozen salmon makes good omelettes, but otherwise I can't stand it.
