I was so lucky to be born at a time when I was more or less safe from the scourge of polio. My wife had a card stating that she was a Polio Pioneer, one of the first to get the shot. I assume that I got the shot, too, but I have no recollection of it. I was watching a 1940s movie a couple of days ago, and a little boy had one of those metal braces on his leg, indicating that he had polio. I'm guessing that they added that for authenticity, but maybe that little actor did have polio.

Reading the article below, that was for a Field Trial. Can you imagine the uproar today if someone wanted to give a trial vaccine against polio? There's already a movement to end the requirement for the measles vaccine.

Sample card below. Notice that it was from the "Cheyenne Mountain School." That was long before the military installation.

Exactly! In areas where parents think the vaccine is dangerous, lots of kids get measles.

Maybe all the anti-vaxxers should move to an island and see how many survive...

The European explorers brought their "common diseases" to the Americas which devastated the population of native inhabitants who had no immunity from them. I often wonder what diseases the new arrivals will bring with them along with the return of those that have been banished thanks to past diligent vaccinations.

I’m the same age as you, Jerry & remember well the polio scare when I was in elementary school. Had a classmate that missed a year of school due to polio; thank goodness he recovered fully from it.

I turned my seventh year in existence by getting ALL of my shots in preparation for emigration to the USA. And that was seven decades ago. I still have a couple of bumps in my arm to show where the needles poked into me.

I have visited Warm Springs, Ga FDR Polio Hospital, viewing the Iron Lungs. Being stuck in those things left me with images that even give me the chills now.

I had a mild case of Polio as a child. This was before the vaccine came out. luckily it was diagnosed right away and treatment started as soon as possible. I remember being in quarantine for a while. I made a pretty good recovery due the quick start of rehab. At age 65 I started to have some other problems and while undergoing some tests, the doctors found and diagnosed post polio syndrome. I am still partially disabled. If any person questions the value or efficiency of this vaccine think again and picture the non vaccinated person in an iron lung or other wise totally disabled. All children must get this vaccine.
