I was going on a nighttime shoot, and I looked up insect repellent on the Consumer Reports site. I got Repel Lemon Eucalyptus, without DEET. Fantastic!

This year (arrived yesterday), they like CVS Woodland Scent Insect Repellent, Off Deep Wood Insect Repellent III Dry, and Repel Plant-Based IInsect Repellent2 (no DEET). You can probably get online at consumerreports.org at home with your library card number.

Once you've bathed in Deep Woods Off day and night to keep mosquitos away (unsuccessfully) during a camping trip, you'll never want to smell pine scent again! We use Repel 100 normally, works great, but I'd rather do the Bug-Me-Not gear while I'm with my camera. Amazon or Walmart, here I come! Was out this morning and mosquitos didn't bother me much, but come 2 p.m. or so they are out for sure.

But did you ever "see" the movie? Or were you to busy?

Smoke a cigar while shooting. That usually keeps mosquitoes away from your hands and face area. Just make sure not to accidentally burn a hole into your camera strap.
I can attest to that working. Hubby smokes a pipe and has far less trouble with mosquitos than I do. Even keeps me away!

I can't find them here at home right now, but there are wrist bands that work for about 12 hours. I was on a lake last week during really high humidity and didn't get bitten once.

What's wrong with DEET it will even kill fleas. I'm probably too old to be dying from a deed overdose.

2 things I use here in Florida a Thermacell a device that creates a 15 'bubble around you , you could sit in the woods in your shorts and not a bug will enter...really works.and also hunters here ware Bug -me -nots has pants and shirt with hood. Good fine mesh suit . The Themacell is sold at Wall Mart in the hunting section I carry both in my Camera bag. They also make Bug-me - not gloves.

Thermacell is a very effective device. It is made as a personal carry, lantern or lamp, all work well.

How in the world do you keep mosquitos away while you're shooting without getting DEET oil all over camera strap, body, lens, lens cap, filter edges, and case? I had to retake a photo the other evening and ended up putting on my winter coat so I only needed to protect my hands and face.

I don't like chemicals on my body or clothing.

I use a mosquito net suit, covering me from head to toe. Google it and you will see many options. On a hot day I wear just a bathing suit and shoes under the suit when doing yard work and am totally protected. It didn't cost very much.

Thanks for all the advice and occasional chuckles. I'm going to get a mosquito suit first. Might try the Bounce softener sheet trick, too. DEET will do me fine for everything else. I'll go by my Dad's old motto: better living thru chemistry for this at least - we found DDT in his garage after he died and had to dispose of it.

LOL, anytime those little (AND some not so little) buggers see a human out with their camera, they KNOW it's dinner time! Years ago when I used to take railroad photographs in West Virginia's New River Gorge, not only did you have the mosquitos to fight with but also a feisty and nasty little black gnat to deal with also (and they LOVED any and all bug repellent).

Whats wrong with DEET?? I love the smell of DEET. And anything that works as well, like Permithrin, is much more toxic.
