How in the world do you keep mosquitos away while you're shooting without getting DEET oil all over camera strap, body, lens, lens cap, filter edges, and case? I had to retake a photo the other evening and ended up putting on my winter coat so I only needed to protect my hands and face.

Gernerally, I rely on my personality. Even mosquitos are repulsed.

I moved from Maryland to Colorado to solve the problem.

I'd think your avatar photo would work, too, Bob

We moved from Oregon to the Midwest because we missed those little buggers so much!

2 things I use here in Florida a Thermacell a device that creates a 15 'bubble around you , you could sit in the woods in your shorts and not a bug will enter...really works.and also hunters here ware Bug -me -nots has pants and shirt with hood. Good fine mesh suit . The Themacell is sold at Wall Mart in the hunting section I carry both in my Camera bag. They also make Bug-me - not gloves.

Thanks, N-brain. Both sound like a great idea. If they can keep away Florida mosquitos they should work well here. Those wearable Off products never worked for me. We even have snow mosquitos up here that show up in mid-winter during snow melts. And we have West Nile virus that I'd just as soon not get. And I'd hate to miss several months of pics because of bites.

The local mosquitos are so big we generally use a 12-gauge on them. Altho I have a neighbor who says he prefers .50 cal. Anything smaller just annoys them.

That sounds great. Do you have ticks and Lyme disease, too? I don't think I could go out and shoot.

This is what I use that is camera friendly without Deet with great results.

Go to an camping gear store and get yourself a mosquito net that fits over your wide brimmed hat. Long sleeves, long pants and socks. And, stay away from bodies of water.

Lyme disease the last 10 years, maybe Rocky Mtn spotted fever showing up recently. Mosquitos and ticks not bad this year until July. Living in country with swampland behind us it's kind of hard to stay unbitten all summer even if all you do is go out to the mailbox. It's not like I can take heartworm meds like the dog. Pays my money and takes my chances, within reason.

I was going on a nighttime shoot, and I looked up insect repellent on the Consumer Reports site. I got Repel Lemon Eucalyptus, without DEET. Fantastic!

This year (arrived yesterday), they like CVS Woodland Scent Insect Repellent, Off Deep Wood Insect Repellent III Dry, and Repel Plant-Based IInsect Repellent2 (no DEET). You can probably get online at consumerreports.org at home with your library card number.
