How in the world do you keep mosquitos away while you're shooting without getting DEET oil all over camera strap, body, lens, lens cap, filter edges, and case? I had to retake a photo the other evening and ended up putting on my winter coat so I only needed to protect my hands and face.
I like the DEET wipes. I can keep a few in my camera bag and only pull them out if needed. The DEET in them tends not to be so oily.
Hi,.........I have always had the best results with permethrin.......its not a skin application but a clothes application. Most recognize it as a tick repellent but has same results with mosquitos.........spray clothes and hat, let dry, they will hover but stay off.............if they are really bad and getting to hands and face then picariden works but the Lemon Eucalyptus tend to be a milder solution to deal with and as effective. A net will work but I have used nets and found them awkward. If it is mild or warm, I wear a Patagonia long sleeve sun shirt........they vent and have hoods and are also designed to protect from the sun. Spray it down with permethrin, especially around the hood and it is effective. That being said, there are some times and places where the mosquitos are very thick and there is nothing that will work 100%.........its just part of deciding to either go or not.

2 things I use here in Florida a Thermacell a device that creates a 15 'bubble around you , you could sit in the woods in your shorts and not a bug will enter...really works.and also hunters here ware Bug -me -nots has pants and shirt with hood. Good fine mesh suit . The Themacell is sold at Wall Mart in the hunting section I carry both in my Camera bag. They also make Bug-me - not gloves.
Theracells work very well. Check out Bug Tamer for hooded jacket with face net. They also have gloves
I have a can of insect repellent in my car. I will spray my clothes and legs (when I'm wearing shorts), put some on my hands and apply it to my face and neck, I will spray the hat I wear. Then I get my camera and go photograph. The camera never comes close to the repellent.
Smoke a cigar. They track you down via your carbon dioxide output.

I use Repel a non-DEET repellent ALso my summer clothing has had an Insect-Shield treatment against ticks, chiggers etc.
I "ditto" the suggestion on Thermacell. Those little units are the only thing my wife and I have found that really keep the little buggers away and we've been making out living in the out doors (fly fishing) for more than 40 years. They are great! Take care & ...

Would help to know more about the shooting conditions. Are you in a fixed location or do you need to miove about while shooting? Are you on a platform or chest deep in water? Are you on a boat? Is it morning, afternoon or dusk?
Very easy safe cheap and it works. I use "BOUNCE" yup the sheets you put in your dryer to dry your clothes. But it must be BOUNCE the others don't work as well. Rub it on your face, nose, neck and all exposed skin and don't forget your ears.
Unfortunately, for some unknown reason I am a mosquito magnet... I have used REPEL for years... MAX 40% DEET ... the thermacell did not work well for me...
Try Avon Skin-So-Soft. I know a lot of fishermen who use it regularly - it smells much better and is much healthier than smoking! Also, I haven't tried it, but I've heard that small dabs of Vick's Vaporub works.
