A simple solution, also very affordable, is Jean Nate' after bath body splash. It has an alcohol base but won't damage clothing. It has a pleasant smell, but it repulses mosquitoes. I couldn't understand why everyone else was being bitten, but I wasn't. Years later, when nothing was working or they were too greasy, I remembered it was the Jean Nate'. Even My husband loves it and we carry it in our golf bags as well. You can find it at Walgreens in a round bottle with a round black knob on top. Put it in a smaller spray bottle. Spray your hair, hat, clothes and skin. Keep off of glasses and camera equipment. Don't use it around bears. I don't know what it would do to them, but you smell sweet for a bit. The smell tones down immediately but the effect lasts for several hours.
A funny incident. A group of us, about 30, were at a high school football game. The bugs were horrendous. Nothing was working. There were people from a very popular company that manufactures bug sprays. (think BIG name company). I said Jean Nate' will do a better job. They told me they had analyzed the product and it didn't work. After about 20 minutes, I went to my car and came back with my spray bottle. I sprayed the entire group. Looking up at the lights, there were no flying insects of any kind. None of them liked this stuff. I think there is a bit of citronella in the mixture, but I don't happen to have a gas chromatograph available to prove it.
Good luck!
