I think having a NEWBIE AREA is a great idea! I'm 65 years old, a retired teacher, and have bought my first dslr camera and want to learn it thoroughly. I want to ask questions, I am reading books, and watching videos, but I'm hesitant to post questions because of the remarks by others that I've seen here. Some responses posted by others sound like a verbal cat fight.... that I would not want any part of! I have just joined your forum and was surprised by the intensity of the attacks by some members towards other members. Thank you for suggesting this, blb511

blb511,

Well said, and Welcome to the UHH!

Even framing the question or problem can be a problem when the problem may lie in several areas at one time. I'm no longer a newbie, and even when I got my first DLSR, I had 50+ years of film experience, but even now it is sometimes difficult to find a particular topic in the index of a book because the author calls, and thinks of it, in different terms. As the old teachers' advice said, there is no dumb question, except the one not asked when you need, or don't understand, the answer.

One suggestion right off the top: if you are having following the new camera's manual, try to find a non-OEM book about the camera. Too frequently the Owners Manual will tell you how to do something, but not explain why, or more importantly, when the function should be used. Today's DSLR's have so many menus and capabilities, the most of us probably use less than half of them.

Don't be afraid to post questions or pictures that show some problem; generally you will get mostly good answers; as far as the supercilious, rude, and snarky posts mixed in, just ignore them. This is a good forum with a vast majority of good people and excellent photographers, most of them willing to help.

Maybe its time for a newbie question area. where they can safely ask their questions and hopefully NOT get the snide remarks that are so common here.

Then if your one of the ones that hates the newbie questions, you dont have to visit that area.

what do u think?

I think if you are an intolerant pompous egotistical self-serving ass you might applaud this addition.

We do, ofc, have the "search" option available, which I have an idea is highly unused since topics seem to re-surface repeatedly. Perhaps an "index" of helpful threads would be a step beyond the search option. I wouldn't include every thread in the index. I would only include those thread that significantly explain a particular subject. One could then peruse the index without having to do a search.

As hardball as the game is played on UHH at times I think enough good obvious information is offered 100% of the time.

I don't know if someone looking for "professional" answers will even consider a pre-school forum idea. If their unable to find answers from their piers locally, it doesn't seem likely they will be attracted to more confusion from other "nubies"... unless someone would be assigned to the answering task.

I think in most cases people ask good remedial questions as is...the most ridicule comes when a "professional" that take stands that seems basic and unfounded to the majority, especially when dealing with format and pixels.

But...it could be good if monitored and supplied with solid information... that would require a mentoring effort and interest from the regular seasoned contributors.

by the way..." what is the best lens to use to take a selfi with a D1x"...

I would love to see an edited section of newbie questions and their well-vetted, clear answers. Call it "newbie Q&A archives" or something. Then we can direct users there for reference. "Please see the Newbie Q&A Archive, and/or RTFM."

In ref. to your question, "by the way..." what is the best lens to use to take a selfi with a D1x"..." I'd suggest the widest angle lens you can get, even a fisheye. This will provide you with sufficient depth of field so that your entire face is sharply focused, as well as the surroundings so people can see where the photo was taken.

geez, I can't find a tongue in cheek emoji.

I need the ease of a newbie
topic area! Agree, the snarkiness is unnecessary and pushes a newbie away!

One thing that would really help newbies (and everyone else) is an improved search function that returns results in date order so that the latest posts appear first. It would be great if it also searched for key words within posts rather than just titles, but that's probably expecting too much 😩

I'm a new "oldbe". I started taking pictures 40 years ago with a Pentax K1000. I pretty much quit in the 80's when I started my own business (NOT photo related) and started again in ernest about 5 years ago when I retired. I find the forum to be a great source of information, help, and entertainment. Snide remarks to an honestly asked simple question aren't frequent here, but they can be irksome. And yes, I know that questions from newbies can get in the way....wait what? Don't they only get in the way if you feel compelled to respond to them? Snarks are everywhere in this new world; maybe you need to start a thread for snarks only...

For search you are better off using Google. Start your search with uglyhedgehog:

In Google use Tools and then select your time frame.

Whoever moderates the section would do well to only allow comments from certain people. That has worked in other sections. My concern is that newbies are susceptible to all sorts of misinformation. This only causes more confusion and frustration. The worst is that they give up entirely and loose the fun of taking and making good photographs.

Hi,

It worked with me. I tried posting a macro industrial photograph in the Macro section and it was deleted - I assume because it was not an insect or butterfly. ( it was the inside of a TV co-ax connector that has a whisker of shield shorting to the centre conductor)

In my case - I have experience in what is called "Industrial photography" - not as a photographer but as part of my work. I know cameras and how to use them, from 1/4 plate to the current DSLR's. If I see something I like - I can take a photograph of it. In that sense I could be classed as 'advanced' - BUT as far as portraits, setting up lighting. weddings, pets, street etc. I am a beginner - and due to the kind of comments, very hesitant in posting photographs. . ( I am retired and in my 80's)
