The only solution to getting rid of nasty comments, is to get rid of nasty commenters.

This may seem drastic because some of these 'nasty commenters' actually have wealth of knowledge and have helped many people. However, one never knows if they are going to get Dr Jekyll or Mr Hyde, on that particular day.

I belong to a woodcarving group. We have almost 80,000 members. Many questions get asked over and over again. This can not be avoided in a group that big. At the top of every category is a message from the administrator. It states that, due to the varied levels of skill, many questions will be asked over and over. If you are asking a question, please do a search first. If you still have questions, please ask. If you think a question is stupid, redundant, has already been addressed, or just outright irritates you, please do everyone a favor and skip the question. If you feel you must reply and your reply is deemed rude, negative, or undesirable by the administrator, it will be deleted and you will have 1 warning. If you repeat this behavior, you will be banned. If you take offense to this, please remember that this is not your site. You are a guest here and should act like it. If I want to spend my time breaking up fights, I will go to the playground.

While this might seem kind of harsh, it is a great site with wonderful people. There are hardly any complaints. People get along. The admin really means it to. You will be booted out it you disrespect others.

While this may work,Admin most likely has enough to do. Is there not a theoretical means in place to complain? If someone gets enough feedback to demand attention, that may work too. I would think that maybe a few would catch on...

An inherent part of the "Search" suggestion is the quality of the search function. As more and more information has been posted to the web in general, Google has shown to be less than efficient in providing specific results unless one really knows how to structure the request. Within a site, the search function can produce results that are less than desirable and overly time-consuming to read through to find a simple answer. This results in the more straightforward approach of posting a question with hopes of expediting getting an answer.

That's good, but let's find a way to encourage "no snide or mean comments". A code of conduct might be a good idea.

We see lots of questions, such as why is everything behind my subject blurry? what is ISO , SOOC etc etc.

Then we get the people replying with nasty comments, such as read a book go to school etc. ( there are of course lots of people that try to help as well)

Then there are a lot of people that wont ask their newbie question because they are afraid of the nasty responses.
Maybe its time for a newbie question area. where they can safely ask their questions and hopefully NOT get the snide remarks that are so common here.

Then if your one of the ones that hates the newbie questions, you dont have to visit that area.

what do u think?

One option to limit responses to your post is to go to a member's profile and add them to your "IGNORE LIST".

Don't open the post and you won't have to deal with us simplistic folks,or move on when you decide you need not or do not want to participate.

I think it's a great idea and I would go to it an help with any questions I can answer. I was helped a number of times by Hoggers who knew more than I did. I'm more than happy to return that help!

I've seen that there are plenty more that feel the same.

I'm with you!! My sentiments exactly. I've never understood what motivates the nastiness.

Sad bdk that you even have to suggest this. I have seen several nasty or snarky comments. Too bad because these new photographers probably won't come back to this site. I suggest that if you can't say anything nice or helpful DON"T COMMENT AT ALL!!

There is a section, I believe it is called " Frequently asked questions,"........

http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-106-1.html

Typically the subjects raised in that section are quite advanced. Having a similar section specifically for newbies sounds like an excellent idea. It would attract beginners, and the more experienced helpers would not be inclined to make snide or unhelpful comments.

Newbie questions are sort of universal. The answers often contain insights one might not have considered, and answering these questions often instructs the answerer as much as the questioner. You never learn something so well as when you have to teach it to someone else. We are never going to cure incivility, but we do need to remind the newbies that there are no "stupid" questions, and to pay no mind to the few (stupid) rude answers.
